IPL Auction notes: How teams embraced well-laid plans and mindful spending to assemble strong squads | Cricket News

IPL Auction 2025: Beyond a 17-year-old tournament witnessing a 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi become a crorepati and Ambala born Gurjapneet Singh who found a home at Tamil Nadu now donning the famous yellow jersey, the two-day IPL mega auctions saw teams tussle for the best talents and assemble a strong squad. In the past, franchises have come out of the auction table with plenty of unanswered questions and imbalanced squads. But at Jeddah they came up with well-laid plans and put together evenly matched squads on paper. The two most successful franchises with five titles each, they remained in total control, even as others scrambled around. Having retained their Indian core, Mumbai Indians as usual went big for an overseas pacer in Trent Boult and a new ball bowler in Deepak Chahar. For the rest, they relied on their scouting team, which helped them snap Ryan Rickelton and uncapped Kiwi Bevan-John Jacobs to lend lower-order firepower. In Will Jacks, they got their overseas top-order bat and finished another auction without going big on a spinner. Chennai …

Quick comment: Why Punjab Kings went after Shreyas Iyer aggressively, despite him being largely invisible | Cricket News

Quick comment: Why Punjab Kings went after Shreyas Iyer aggressively, despite him being largely invisible | Cricket News

If Rishabh Pant walking away as the most expensive player at Rs 27 crore was a certainty, Punjab Kings shelling out Rs 26.75 crore for Shreyas Iyer after staving off Delhi Capital’ persistence was unprecedented. His name barely made any noise, or even a whisper in the days leading up to the auction. It could be that he had been lying low in the past few months, largely confined to domestic toils. Then, cricketers like Shreyas Iyer are always in demand. There are compelling factors that make him a hot entity on the auction table. He is an experienced, proven and reliable batsman. While there has not been an earth-shatteringly standout season, Shreyas Iyer has been consistent. In five of the nine he has scored over 400 runs, winning several matches en route. In the last season, he upped his strike rate from the early 130s to mid-140s. There are little doubts about his stroke-play. The short-balls don’t harangue him in this format as much as in Test cricket. At his best, Shreyas Iyer is …

IPL Auction 2025: Shreyas Iyer becomes most expensive player in IPL history, sold for Rs 26.75 crore to Punjab Kings | Cricket News

IPL Auction 2025: Shreyas Iyer on Sunday became the first player to breach the Rs 25 crore mark at the IPL auctions, becoming the most expensive player in history. After leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third Indian Premier League title, Iyer was roped in for an eye-popping Rs 26.75 crore by Punjab Kings, surpassing the previous highest of Mitchell Starc, who was sold to KKR for Rs 24.75 crore last edition. Iyer was in the midst of a three-way bidding process between KKR, his former Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings during the historic bidding process. After missing the entirety of IPL 2023 due to injury concerns, Iyer returned with 351 runs in 14 matches during KKR’s waltz to the title. The 29-year-old had a rocky start to the domestic season, bagging three ducks in five matches across the Duleep Trophy and the first round of the Ranji Trophy. Iyer was quick to bounce back to form as he cracked consecutive hundreds in the subsequent Ranji rounds, including a career-best 233 against Odisha. On …

IPL Auction 2025: Will Shreyas Iyer’s SMAT century on eve of mega auction stir a bidding war in Jeddah? | Cricket News

IPL Auction 2025: Will Shreyas Iyer’s SMAT century on eve of mega auction stir a bidding war in Jeddah? | Cricket News

Shreyas Iyer blazed through against the Goa bowling attack in Mumbai’s first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) on Saturday, scoring a blistering 130* off just 57 balls. Iyer’s whirlwind knock, the third ton of his T20 career, eventually ended up being just above par for Mumbai as Goa offered a huge scare in a 251-run chase at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad, losing only by 26 runs. Despite an all-format snub, the out-of-favour India batter proved just a day before the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Jeddah, that he would be a force to reckon with and would be a great asset, irrespective of the team that will hold out the paddle for him.   Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made a surprising decision by dropping Iyer from a full deck of six retentions. Should they wish to bring back the captain who led them to their third title, KKR will have to roll out fresh bids after exhausting the option of using a Right-to-Match (RTM) card at the auction table. …
