Vanishing balconies in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru: Here’s why urban homes are forced to shrink open spaces

As buildings touch the skies, apartment sizes shrink, and towers get packed so tightly that a neighbour just a few feet away can peer straight into your living room, the once-simple pleasure of stepping out for a quiet cup of tea on the balcony is steadily losing its charm. Worsening air quality, particularly in NCR and Mumbai, along with perennial mosquito problems, are making balcony living far less appealing. For most urban residents, what was once a desirable feature is fast fading into memory. Balconies are shrinking or disappearing from mid-segment homes in Bengaluru and NCR, reflecting a shift toward luxury-focused designs. (Photo for representative purposes only) (Pixabay) A clear trend emerging across cities such as Bengaluru and the NCR is that balconies are shrinking in size, vanishing from mid-segment homes, and increasingly being reserved for high-end developments. Experts say this shift reflects growing buyer awareness about what they are actually paying for within their homes. Balconies are no longer standard inclusions; they are evolving into aspirational features typically associated with luxury apartments. In NCR …

IIT placement rates slide, pays shrink as vaunted colleges reconcile with AI, changing job market

The overall placement rates at the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) fell from over 90% to just around 80% between 2021-22 and 2023-24, with the weighted average annual salaries reducing marginally from ₹23.45 lakh to ₹22.7 lakh, a HT analysis shows, with IIT administrators and faculty attributing the trend to an uncertain job market and high student expectations, although they insist that the overall placement scenario in the IITs is stable. 2025 Super Cup set to shrink further to less than 16 teams

The Super Cup is set to shrink further, with the number of clubs competing in the 2025 edition set to be below 16. The Super Cup, Indian football’s season ending knock out competition, was first held in 2018 and started off with 20 teams. The previous edition of the tournament, won by East Bengal FC, saw a total of 17 teams in contention last year. The number is now set to fall below 16, as per a report in Times of India. The Super Cup usually sees participation from all the top Indian Super League clubs and a few I-League teams. However, this time around only two I-League clubs – bitter rivals Churchill Brothers and Inter Kashi – have shown interest in the competition due to financial constrains. Besides, not all the expected Indian Super League teams have confirmed their participation either, leaving the competition in a state of chaos. All this despite the fact that the winner of 2025 Super League gets a spot to compete at the 2025-26 AFC Champions League 2 Playoffs. …

Representational file image. | Photo Credit: PTI With the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) witnessing a gradual decrease in its vote share over the years in Punjab’s political space, the party ‘chronic spoilsport’ role continues to shrink in electoral politics of the State, even as it could still play a spoilsport in a handful of parliamentary constituencies in the 2024 General Election. The survey is one of the largest into the AI topic. A new survey by staffing firm Adecco Group suggests a wave of automation is coming, with 41% of executives at large companies worldwide expecting to reduce their workforce due to artificial intelligence (AI) within the next five years. This news comes amidst the growing adoption of generative AI, a technology capable of creating realistic text, images, and videos. While some see it as a tool to eliminate repetitive tasks, others fear it will render entire jobs obsolete. “Almost all jobs are going to be impacted by AI one way or another,” Adecco CEO Denis Machuel told Reuters. “AI can be a job killer, and it can also be a job creator. “Ten years ago, there was this big fear that many jobs were going to be destroyed by digital, when actually lots of jobs had been created by the digital world,” he said. “Between jobs created by AI and jobs destroyed, we believe this is going to be balanced.” The survey included executives from …
