An Illustrated Guide to Singapore’s Roti Canai

An Illustrated Guide to Singapore’s Roti Canai

I take a seat near a mural of Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. Outside, the Buffalo Road HDB blocks stand as landmarks of the neighbourhood. The name Tekka comes from the Hokkien phrase Tek Kia Kha, meaning “foot of the small bamboo,” referencing bamboo that once grew along the Rochor Canal. Two hundred years ago, Tamil labourers grew rice and sugarcane here. Now I sit in the same place eating sugar on my roti canai. Every bite is crisp and sweet, the smell of burnt sugar, alluring and irresistible.  A dish created by migrants for comfort still comforts many today across our island home and our counterparts across the causeway. It reminds me of my home Chennai, but in a completely different way. Food is the language that unites people lucky enough to call Singapore home, I’m grateful I get to be one of those people. A Love Letter to Singapore’s “Point-Point” Rice

A Love Letter to Singapore’s “Point-Point” Rice

Yeo Min also always reaches for brinjal, a leafy vegetable, and a fried meat, with curry “a must”, but also avoids steamed fish entirely for that same understanding that it might “burn a hole in [her] pocket.” For Caitanya, her default plate instinctively recreates a childhood memory of her parents’ cooking. Her typical orders of curry cabbage, egg, and brinjal mirror those early meals more closely than she realised. Tse Wei recalls something more functional: economy rice was a regular default during his school years, with vegetables, three-cup chicken, and stewed tau kwa (extra-firm tofu), all eaten without much thought. “It is a default,” he shares. Tay Jia Ling, co-owner of Curry Kong, grew up around point-point rice. Her parents ran a cai png stall, where the work was about survival: long hours, tight margins, and the daily labour of feeding others. “For them, it was really more about survival… something that could make a living for the family,” she shares. A customer who began eating at her parents’ stall while pregnant, and later returned …

Why Singapore’s AI Lead May Also Be Its Biggest Security Risk

Why Singapore’s AI Lead May Also Be Its Biggest Security Risk

A recent Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) drawn from more than 31,000 security incidents and 22,000 confirmed breaches across 145 countries has identified four accelerating threat vectors AI-ready enterprises are at risk for. They include shadow AI leaking sensitive data through unauthorized tools, human error driving 62% of breaches, third-party compromise now implicated in nearly half of all incidents, and ransomware hitting 96% of Small & Medium Businesses (SMBs). Each of these cases grows in proportion to the operational speed at which Singapore enterprises have made their competitive identity. This article examines how these enterprises are exposed, and what Singaporean IT leaders driving AI adoption can do to cushion the impact of these risks. The DBIR examined what happens inside organizations when AI adoption outpaces governance, and the finding is uncomfortable for any CISO operating in a high-adoption environment. Verizon found that 67% of users accessed AI services through non-corporate accounts on company devices. The research also found that 45% of employees use AI tools — sanctioned or not — on corporate systems, up from …

Exploring Singapore’s Tea Culture

Exploring Singapore’s Tea Culture

But those rocks on the draining tray, Melody tells us, are a bit unorthodox since they are not made of zisha. ‘Some of our older guests tell us that it’s not a tea pet, so they gift us little zisha pets. We keep those too. You feed it, you raise it. It’s a marker of time, and it’s a friend on the tray that grows with you,’ she says. These ‘pets’ bring a little bit of symbolism to daily tea practice, not just for professionals. Most people who brew tea in the Chinese style keep a pet on the tray. I think about my own daily cup. The ginger, the cardamom, and the tea leaves from Darjeeling, where my grandmother used to live. I had not thought of my chai as a ritual that grows shinier with me, over time. In Singapore, a cup of tea is never just a cup of tea. If we let it, it cam sometimes become a meditation. Shradha Biyani is an editor, book writing coach, and founder of Tashi …

Can Data Pros Tackle Singapore’s Data Maturity Crisis?

A new survey by CRM software firm Salesforce revealed that 61% of consumers in Singapore believe that companies are reckless with the customer data they provide, while 74% trust companies less than they did a year ago. The State of the AI Connected Customer research also found customers in Singapore were expecting more from companies when they do provide data. For instance, 75% of consumers wanted consistent interactions across departments, while 71% wanted fewer touchpoints to complete tasks. The survey also shows that IT, data, and AI professionals are fighting to retain customer trust while leveraging the power of data and AI in Singapore.
