Chinese Spies Using LinkedIn, Job Sites to Recruit Western Workers

Chinese Spies Using LinkedIn, Job Sites to Recruit Western Workers

Fake jobs, real intelligence gathering. Intelligence agencies across the Five Eyes alliance, including the FBI, MI5, and counterparts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, have issued a coordinated warning about what they describe as an “aggressive” online recruitment campaign linked to Chinese intelligence services. According to the advisory, operatives are using professional networking platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, and Upwork to pose as recruiters, consultants, or human resources staff working for legitimate-looking firms. The aim, officials say, is to draw in individuals who may have access to sensitive or strategically useful information. How the recruitment scheme works According to the Five Eyes bulletin, the operation often begins with online job advertisements seeking candidates for positions related to foreign policy, defense analysis or similar fields. Applicants’ resumes are then reviewed to determine whether they may have access to valuable information. Interviews are typically conducted online, with recruiters concealing their true identities. During these conversations, candidates may be questioned about government contacts, military activities or professional expertise. The recruitment process can then progress to trial assignments. Applicants …

World Cup Scammers Are Spoofing FIFA Tickets, Job Sites

World Cup Scammers Are Spoofing FIFA Tickets, Job Sites

World Cup excitement is becoming useful bait for online scammers. The FBI warned that fraudsters are creating spoofed FIFA-themed websites to trick fans, job seekers, and merchandise buyers into handing over payment details or personal information ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The fake sites use typosquatting, lookalike domains, and cloned branding to appear legitimate. With several spoofed domains already flagged, targeting ticket and merchandise buyers as well as job seekers, the bureau warns the list is likely to grow. The advice is simple: type the fifa.com URL yourself, skip sponsored links, and when in doubt about a site’s legitimacy, don’t enter any sensitive information on it. Deconstructing the attack flow Under the hood, this campaign combines social engineering, phishing, impersonation, and online fraud. In its PSA, the FBI says that threat actors use typosquatting and a close replica of FIFA’s website interface to trick visitors into believing they are interacting with the legitimate website. When these threat actors aren’t using misspellings or typosquatting, they manipulate top-level domain extensions to get unsuspecting targets to …

MeitY warns VPNs, intermediaries over access to banned betting sites

MeitY warns VPNs, intermediaries over access to banned betting sites

The ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) has directed VPN service providers and online intermediaries to ensure they do not facilitate access to illegal betting and prediction market platforms such as Polymarket, signalling a tighter enforcement push against offshore gaming services operating in India through workarounds. Prediction market platforms such as Polymarket are banned in India. In an advisory issued on April 25, the ministry asked intermediaries and VPN providers to comply with due diligence obligations under existing law, warning that failure to do so could result in the loss of safe harbour protections available under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act. The government said the direction was issued in view of the “serious nature” of the issue. MeitY noted that some users were converting Indian rupees into virtual digital assets such as USD Coin (USDC) and other stablecoins to participate in such platforms despite domestic prohibitions. Polymarket is a crypto-based prediction market platform where users wager on the outcome of real-world events, ranging from elections to economic indicators, by buying and selling …
