Heatwave hits Odisha: Heatwave conditions prevailed across Odisha on Monday with the mercury soaring past 40 degrees Celsius in 17 places. Bhubaneswar: State capital Bhubaneswar sizzled under intense heatwave at 40.4 degrees Celsius, while it was 40 degrees in Cuttack city on Monday. The IMD stated that hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail in most parts of the state on Tuesday. Heatwave conditions prevailed across Odisha on Monday with the mercury soaring past 40 degrees Celsius in 17 places. Sambalpur town was the hottest place in the state, recording a temperature of 42.9 degrees Celsius, according to the meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar. Hirakud recorded 42.4 degrees Celsius, Jharsuguda was at 42.2, and Bolangir at 42.1. Thunderstorms with lightning are likely in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Ganjam, it said. Source link

A heatwave alert was issued by the administration in Maharashtra`s Chandrapur after the district recorded a temperature of 45.6 degrees Celsius on Monday, reported the PTI. The district administration has issued a heatwave alert for three days, advising citizens to take precautions when they step out. As per the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, 11 cities in Vidarbha have recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, with Chandrapur recording the highest 45.6 degrees Celsius. The Chandrapur district has been facing intense heatwave since last week, and a heatwave alert has been issued in one or two places in the district till April 24. After recording a such high temperature on Monday, Chandrpur has become the hottest city in Maharashtra`s Vidarbha region, an official said, as per the PTI. Bramhapuri tehsil recorded a temperature of 45 degrees Celsius and remained the second hottest city in the region, according to the PTI. Delhi on Monday recorded its highest temperature of the season, with the mercury touching 40.2 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, a departure of 5.1 degrees above normal. The rise in temperature is in line with the weather department’s heat wave forecast in the capital for this week.  For the plains, a ‘heatwave’ is declared when the maximum temperature is over 40 degrees Celsius and at least 4.5 notches above normal. “Delhi can see heatwave conditions in the next three days. A western disturbance will influence the Himalayan region from tomorrow night, and its effects will be seen in the Himalayas… Temperatures in the Himalayas will start to fall after tomorrow night and after three days in Punjab and Haryana…,” IMD Scientist Dr Naresh Kumar told news agency ANI. According to the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur, a severe heat spell has begun and is likely to continue for the next two to three days, with no immediate relief in sight. North Indian states are staring at scorching days ahead with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issuing a yellow alert for Delhi while predicting a rise in temperatures in the region over the next 3-4 days. The maximum temperature in the national capital is likely to hover between 40-42 degrees Celsius. According to the IMD, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C and is 4.5°C or more above the normal temperature. After a blazing first week, the second week of March saw a slight dip in daytime temperatures in the coastal districts of the State. However, temperatures rose in Rayalaseema, where the maximum temperature crossed 40Coastal districts experience temperature dip, while Rayalaseema sees scorching heat with maximum temperatures crossing 40°C. Except for Nandigama and Rayalaseema, whose temperatures remained above 37°C on Sunday (March 9, 2025), all other stations in the State recorded temperatures below a maximum of 35°C. Moreover, some of these stations had negative deviations, as their daytime temperatures were below normal. However, Rayalaseema continued to boil as the daytime temperatures in the Nandyal, Kurnool, Kadapa, and Anantapur districts hovered between 38°C and 40°C. According to the information available from the A.P. State Disaster Management Authority, the day’s highest temperature, 40.3°C, was recorded at Alamuru in Nandyal district.
