The Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association (CPWA) Sunday opposed the Karnataka government’s plan to construct a skating rink within Bal Bhavan premises inside Cubbon Park in Bengaluru. Recently, the Jawahar Bal Bhavan Society in association with the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES) mooted a plan to build a skating rink on half acre of land at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore. S Umesh, President, CPWA, said a skating rink was entirely unnecessary in Cubbon Park. “A high-quality skating rink already exists at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium, situated just across the road from Cubbon Park. Constructing a second rink within the lung space of the city is a redundant use of resources that offers no additional public benefit while causing significant environmental harm,” he added. “For years, Cubbon Park has faced the creeping threat of urbanisation. While he won three world titles and six consecutive U.S. titles, Chen will forever be known for the Olympics.
