Over 30 Shanties Burnt In Fire At Slum Area In Gurugram Sector 52

Gurugram: A massive fire burnt more than 30 shanties in a slum area near the Wazirabad village on Saturday afternoon, officials said. The fire spread rapidly after some mini cooking gas cylinders exploded in the slum located near Wazirabad in Sector 52, and it took around two hours to bring the flames under control, a fire official said. According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread so fast that people did not even get a chance to take out their belongings from the shanties. Initial investigation suggests that a short-circuit in the slum may have triggered the fire, the official said. Ov”Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot, which doused the flames after around two hours. The exact cause behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. The blaze gutted more than 30 shanties,” Naresh Kumar, a fire officer from Sector 29 fire station, said. ‘Fire tenders were late…left with nothing’: After fire, migrants in Gurgaon slum begin rebuilding homes | Delhi News

Their temporary houses in a new city they had been calling home for the last three years stand singed. But with no hope of government help, residents of the slums in Gurgaon’s Sector 103, where a fire broke out on Wednesday and gutted over 40 jhuggis (slum hutments), have begun rebuilding their homes – but not without complaints. Mizanur Islam, 35, whose daughter is unwell with a brain tumour, said the fire tenders were delayed. “They came an hour late,” he said. The fire burnt the expensive medicines Islam had purchased for his daughter after saving Rs 12,000 a month. “She has a brain tumour. It was for her that we moved here. Now we have to return to giving her local medicine, and are left with nothing. We have no hope of relief from anyone, especially the government,” he said. “We will have to pay back the contractor for the new houses, he will cut from our pay,” Islam said, placing a bamboo pole in the ground. A plastic sheet will be wrapped over …

Nushrrat Bharuccha says she wasn’t cast in Frieda Pinto’s role in Slumdog Millionaire because makers said she was ‘too pretty to play a slum girl’ | Bollywood News

Nushrrat Bharuccha could’ve made her film debut with Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. She auditioned for the female lead of Latika, a slum girl eventually played by Freida Pinto. However, Nushrrat didn’t bag the part because she was told by the makers that she’s “too pretty” to play a slum girl. “That’s so interesting. Look at the world we’re in. Just look at this field of films,” said Nushrrat. “When I was told this on the phone, I wasn’t understanding what it meant. But I said, ‘Okay,’ because they’re people working at a different level and their thought is very different. Maine kaha theek hai hoga bhai kuchh, kuchh toh socha hoga aapne (There must be something there, they must have thought of something). No problem, sure. But ya, it was a little difficult to hear ki ye kya hota hai, ye kya hai (what kind of a reason is that),” she added. In the interview with Bollywood Bubble, Nushrrat confessed that she understood the reasoning of the makers behind not casting her in …

Amid Delhi poll heat, AAP and BJP accuse each other of betraying slum dwellers | Delhi News

In fresh sparring between the BJP and the AAP amid the Delhi Assembly polls, the two parties accused each other of betraying Delhi’s slum dwellers as the issue of permanent housing for economically weaker sections emerged as the latest flashpoint. BJP’s New Delhi candidate Parvesh Verma alleged that more than 8,000 homes were fully constructed in Delhi and awaiting allocation to those in need. “Yet, instead of handing over these homes to the poor, the Arvind Kejriwal government prioritised its own luxury… breaking and rebuilding bungalows for the Chief Minister, creating extravagant palaces for himself,” he alleged. Verma claimed that in the past year alone, “hundreds of slums” were demolished, leaving entire families homeless. “Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi allotted 1,675 homes in Ashok Vihar, a testament to his commitment to empowering the underprivileged…While Kejriwal built a palace for himself, Delhi’s poor were left homeless. The people of Delhi’s slums demand accountability, justice, and their rightful homes,” he added. In retaliation, the AAP accused the BJP of indulging in “jhuggi tourism” in Delhi during elections, …
