Birthday Special: “I Can Sense Dark Energies in a Person” – Smita Jayakar

Birthday Special: “I Can Sense Dark Energies in a Person” – Smita Jayakar

You take to Smita Jayakar instantaneously. Hers is the benign face you equate with family. Sarfarosh, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani… her career boasts of blockbusters just as her eventful run on television. But nothing can beat the iconic status that her roles in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (HDDCS) and Devdas achieved. As Amrita, who understands the rebellion and heartbreak of her daughter in HDDCS and as the ill-fated Kaushalya, who witnesses the disintegration of her son in Devdas, she depicted both the strength and susceptibility of a mother.  Counted amongst filmdom’s most beautiful moms, her resemblance to veteran Moushumi Chatterjee unmistakable, Smita has a four-decade run behind her. But along the lustre of limelight runs her longstanding pursuit of spiritualpractices. Her journey first began with Master Prabhuji, who gifted her the healing technique of ‘auto-writing’ believed to connect people with departed souls. In addition to her time with Oneness University, she’s been with the MaitriBodh Parivaar, her present Master being global humanitarian Maitreya Dadashreeji. Reiki, pranic healing, past life regression, kundalini energy, aura reading, crystal healing… she has explored various spiritual therapies to give her clients a transformative experience. Her books including IF You Can Just BE, Before Tomorrow and In Everness… all are but efforts to further awareness. For someone who walks the tightrope between the world as we know it and the ‘beyond’, Smita is no high priestess of …

When Shabana Azmi Gave Smita Patil Sleepless Nights During Arth, “She Was Supposed To Play The Bai…”

Smita Patil & Shabana Azmi’s Cold War Was The Most Talked About Rivalry Of Hindi Cinema! (Photo Credit: Instagram) The parallel cinema movement of Hindi cinema in the 1970s and ’80s introduced us to two powerhouse performers – Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil! Both shared a similar artistic palette, and both were the prized muses of filmmakers like Shyam Benegal and Mahesh Bhatt. Interestingly, both redefined the portrayal of Indian women on screen. Yet, off-screen, their relationship was marked by an intense, unspoken cold war that blew out of proportion on the sets of Arth, and the rift, sadly, remained unsolved and ended only with Smita Patil’s tragic death in 1986. Decades later, Shabana Azmi recalled the rivalry and what exactly happened that turned the final nail in the coffin. Things went so south that there was no coming back to a mutual balance and working together! And it all happened with one witness – Mahesh Bhatt, who directed the two of them! “Smita Was Supposed To Play The Bai”: How Arth Turned Tables! The …

Smita Bansal on choosing finite TV over daily soaps: Television has very similar plots and characters

After headlining some of television’s longest-running daily soaps, Smita Bansal is ready to turn the page. The actor, who will next be seen in an upcoming finite television series, says she consciously chose to move away from the familiar world of saas-bahu dramas, looking instead for stories and characters that challenge her creatively. Speaking to HT City, Bansal admits that after years of playing mothers and mothers-in-law, she had reached a stage where she was eager to break free from the image television had created for her. While she understands why actors often get boxed into familiar roles, she believes the industry’s tendency to “play safe” often comes at the cost of creative exploration. Smita Bansal on choosing finite TV over daily soaps: Television has very similar plots and characters “Everyone wants to play safe. Once audiences have loved you in a particular character, people become unsure whether they’ll accept you doing something different. That becomes a challenge because you keep getting repeated in similar kinds of roles,” she says, adding that she was consciously …

Smita Tambe: Filmmaking is never about one actor; every crew member deserves to be celebrated

Actor Smita Tambe believes the biggest strength of cinema lies in its collective effort. While actors may become the face of a film, she says every person working behind the scenes contributes equally to the final product. Having built a career around character-driven roles, Smita who was recently seen in Bharat Bhagya Vidhata says she considers herself fortunate to be associated with stories that value performances over star power. Smita Tambe “I’ve always felt blessed that the films I get to do are character-driven. But filmmaking is never about one actor,” she tells us. “Every head of department, every makeup artist, every hairstylist, every light technician, every camera person, every editor and every member of the crew contributes to making a film what it is. Actors are just one department. That’s what should be celebrated,” she elaborates. While her recent release Bharat Bhagya Vidhata received a modest response at the box office, Smita believes collections alone should never become the yardstick to judge an actor’s work. She points out that a film’s commercial performance is …
