Solar energy, cheap battery storage can meet 90% of India’s power demand at affordable costs: Ember report| India News

Battery storage is now cheap enough in India that solar power can meet 90% of the country’s power demand at lower lifetime costs than current average purchase rates in most states, a new study has found, a finding that could potentially point to a future buffer against global energy shocks. Essentially, solar power can affordably supply India with power day and night for most months, especially in states with high solar irradiance (a measure of solar intensity). (PTI) Essentially, solar power can affordably supply India with power day and night for most months, especially in states with high solar irradiance (a measure of solar intensity). Modelling by energy think tank Ember showed that India could have met 90% of its electricity requirements in 2024 with solar and battery power at a levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) – a metric to evaluate the average cost of power generation for an energy asset’s lifetime – of ₹5.06/kWh, assuming there are no grid constraints.HT reported on April 2 that the government is taking several measures to reduce LPG …

UP’s first floating solar power plant to come up in Lalitpur

UP’s first floating solar power plant to come up in Lalitpur

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the state’s first floating solar power plant to be set up on a reservoir in Lalitpur. The project will be developed by the Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL), which will use the power generated as captive energy for its gas processing operations in the region. The government had initially identified 35 potential sites for floating solar installations, but shortlisted six after detailed assessment. (FOR REPRESENTATION ) “The state’s first floating solar plant will be set up at the Maudaha dam/reservoir in Lalitpur with an investment of ₹257 crore by GAIL,” a senior energy department official said. “The 49 mw (megawatt) plant is expected to be operational in 18 months,” he added. Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), the state government’s nodal body, had invited applications through its dedicated portal for setting up floating solar plants at six identified dams/reservoirs in the state. “We have finalised one of the six locations by approving GAIL’s proposal. The portal is open for receiving applications for the remaining five …

Kerala’s nuclear power dilemma – The Hindu

Kerala’s nuclear power dilemma – The Hindu

After a long gap, Kerala is again grappling with the merits and demerits of nuclear power plants. The topic grabbed headlines following a meeting earlier this year between the Chairman and Managing Director of the State-run Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd., where the possibility of building a plant in Kerala was discussed. The State’s Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty has sought to tread lightly on the contentious issue. According to him, the government can scarcely embark upon such a project without consensus and public approval. In the just-concluded session of the State Assembly, Mr. Krishnankutty stated that the government has not adopted any policy decision regarding the construction of nuclear power stations. Solar Power Play Plans: What It Will Take to Get A Panel on Every Rooftop

It is sustainable, climate-friendly and can help slash your surging power bills. After nearly a decade-long campaign and a boom in the renewable energy market, rooftop solar panels haven’t yet become a popular choice for a majority of the Indian households. However, a new government scheme intends to change that. ALSO READ | ‘Green & Clean’: Budget Boost to India’s ‘Net Zero’ Ambition; Support for Rooftop Solar, Offshore Wind With a massive outlay of nearly Rs 75,000 crore, the new nationwide scheme aims to install rooftop panels over 10 million households in the country. If all goes as per plan, this may also help the government reach its long-drawn national target of 40 GW by 2022, now extended to 2026. But this would be a gigantic task. Rooftop solar power has been lagging in India, with just 7-8 lakh households added since 2015 contributing to an installation capacity of merely 11 GW – just 27% of the actual target. India’s total solar capacity stands around 73.3 GW by the end of 2023. For India to …
