Sonam Maskar, Narmada NR miss out on 10m air rifle podium

India’s Sonam Maskar and Narmada Nithin Raju finished sixth and eighth respectively in women’s 10m air rifle final at the 2025 ISSF Shooting World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Monday. While Sonam was the first to exit the final with the lowest score of 124.4 after 12 shots in the final, Narmada stayed in contention for four more shots, eventually being the third to exit with a score of 166.3. After the first ten shots, before the start of the two-shot elimination process, Sonam was ranked sixth with a score of 104.2 whereas Narmada and USA’s Carolynn Mary Tucker followed closely in with a score of 104 each. However, a 9.9 with her 12th shot from Sonam meant that she slipped down the pecking order and had to finish eighth. Naramada, meanwhile, further opened up a 0.2 point lead over Tucker, who eventually finished seventh. A packed Dr Karni Singh Shooting range, with the repeated booms of dhols and the jeering and whistling of the crowds at tense moments, can be intimidating. Add some of the best rifle shooters in the world, some of whom excelled at the Paris Olympics, and the challenge gets tougher. At 22 and only having participated in one senior World Cup prior to Tuesday, Sonam Maskar was green to the occasion. To her left stood Germany’s Anna Jannsen, who just an hour earlier, had broken the Women’s qualification World Record. To her extreme right stood China’s Han Jiayu, a perennial champion in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event, with World and Olympic medals to her name. Indian shooter Sonam Maskar won a silver medal in the women’s 10m air rifle category at the ISSF World Cup finals, in Delhi, on Tuesday. Day one of the World Cup finals saw the finals of four events, and Maskar won India’s first and only medal of the day. Despite Olympic shooters participating in other categories for India, no other podium finish was attained by the hosts. Rhythm Sangwan and Ujjwal Malik won the air pistol mixed team gold as they beat the Armenian pair of Karapetyan Elmira and Khlghatyan Benik 17-7 in the final of the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event at the ISSF World Cup – Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun, in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday. It was India’s first gold in the event, and it helped India rise to the top of the medal chart. In the qualification round, Rhythm and Ujjwal finished second behind Elmira and Benik, but outwit the Armenians in the final. Earlier today, Arjun Babuta, 25, and Sonam Maskar, 21, won a silver medal in the 10m air rifle Mixed team event. The Indian pair lost a closely fought contest against Great Britain’s Mcintosh Seonaid and Bale Dean in the final by a margin of 14-16.
