Smriti Mandhana shines with 83 as India bowled out for 285

3 min readJul 10, 2026 11:47 PM IST At 189/3 after 44 overs, India appeared to have seized control of the opening day of the one-off Test at Lord’s. But a brief stoppage after Harmanpreet Kaur required treatment on her left arm disrupted India’s rhythm, offering England a chance to reset. The hosts capitalised immediately. Issy Wong, who had already broken the 64-run stand between Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues before lunch, claimed the wicket England desperately needed four balls after play resumed, dismissing Smriti Mandhana for 83. From a position where they looked set to dominate, India lost their last six wickets for 96 runs, handing England a route back into the contest. Mandhana was the architect of India’s recovery after early setbacks, producing an innings that blended her trademark fluency with patience. After Shafali Verma and Yastika Bhatia fell cheaply to leave India at 24/2, the left-hander assumed responsibility alongside Rodrigues. She countered England’s early movement by punishing anything overpitched and pulling confidently whenever the seamers dropped short. Crisp drives through cover, authoritative …

WPL 2026: Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield shine as UP Warriorz outclass Mumbai Indians by 22 runs in Navi Mumbai finale | Cricket News

Fifties from Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield helped Warriorz reach 187/8 which proved too much for MI in the end. The UP Warriorz’ Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 campaign gathered further momentum on Saturday as they produced a near-complete performance to defeat reigning champions Mumbai Indians by 22 runs to end their D.Y.Patil Stadium leg of the season on a high. Lanning-Litchfield shine After Kiran Navgire fell for a first-ball duck, the Australian duo of captain Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield made full use of the batting-friendly conditions to lay the foundation for UP Warriorz to reach 187/8 after 20 overs. Lanning walked in carrying confidence from her 54 against Delhi Capitals and quickly settled into her rhythm, using the leg-side boundaries to great effect. She punished anything loose from the MI pacers, and a couple of crisp fours and a six over fine-leg early on set the tone. Deepti Sharma returns to UP Warriorz for ₹3.20 crore

Deepti Sharma returns to UP Warriorz for ₹3.20 crore

Deepti Sharma emerged as one of the biggest headline-makers of the WPL 2026 auction in New Delhi on Thursday, with UP Warriorz exercising their Right to Match (RTM) card to retain the India all-rounder for ₹3.20 crore. The amount makes her the second-most expensive player in league history. Mumbai Indians secured New Zealand’s all-rounder Amelia Kerr for ₹3 crore, while Gujarat Giants bought Kiwi veteran Sophie Devine for ₹2 crore. UP Warriorz were active throughout the session, also winning a bidding battle to sign Australia’s Meg Lanning for ₹1.90 crore and using a second RTM card to bring back England spinner Sophie Ecclestone for ₹85 lakh. Delhi Capitals picked up South African opener Laura Wolvaardt for ₹1.10 crore, and Gujarat Giants added India pacer Renuka Singh for ₹60 lakh. In a surprising twist, Australia captain Alyssa Healy went unsold. Deepti’s return, after a tense bidding war between Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz, was the highlight of the auction. UP invoked RTM at a decisive moment, pulling Agra’s star all-rounder back into the squad. The signing …

Sophie Ecclestone helps UP Warriorz past RCB in super over – Talking Points

Sophie Ecclestone helps UP Warriorz past RCB in super over – Talking Points

Sophie Ecclestone starred with both bat and the ball as UP Warriorz beat the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a super over at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday. Both the teams scored an identical 180 in their quota of 20 overs to force a super over. While the Warriorz scored 8/1 in the super over bowled by Kim Garth, the RCB duo of Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh could muster only 4/0 as Ecclestone bowled a tight over to hand them their second consecutive loss. Here are the talking points from the match: First-ever super over Kranti Goud swinged and missed a ball outside off stump and set off for a non-existent single. Wicketkeeper Ghosh collected the ball, ran to the stumps and clipped the bails off to catch Ecclestone, who was rushing in from the non-strikers end well short of the crease. The UP Warriorz were bowled out for 180 in 20 overs with just one run needed to win off the final delivery. Ghosh’s presence of mind to run to the stumps forced …

Sophie Ecclestone Shines As UP Warriorz Beat RCB In WPL’s First-Ever Super Over

Sophie Ecclestone Shines As UP Warriorz Beat RCB In WPL’s First-Ever Super Over

Sophie Ecclestone produced a superb all-round show to hand UP Warriorz a sensational win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the first-ever Super Over of the Women’s Premier League on Monday. Sent into bat, Ellyse Perry and Danni Wyatt-Hodge sparkled with the bat to guide RCB 180 for six. Perry smashed an unbeaten 90 off 56 balls while opener Wyatt-Hodge made 57. But Ecclestone, who registered economical figures of 4-0-29-0, showed her prowess with the bat, scoring 33 off 19 balls to help UP Warriorz made a remarkable comeback to tie the match and take it to the Super Over, where they came out on top. UP Warriorz managed just eight runs in the super over bowled by Kim Garth. The onus was then on RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh to chase down the target of nine runs against Ecclestone but the English cricketer came out on top, conceding just four runs. Earlier, RCB lost Mandhana early, bowled by Deepti Sharma in the fourth over. Perry joined hands with Wyatt-Hodge and the …

WPL 2025 | UPW vs DC: Meg Lanning’s return to form a positive as Delhi Capitals leave it late to beat UP Warriorz | Cricket News

WPL 2025 | UPW vs DC: Meg Lanning’s return to form a positive as Delhi Capitals leave it late to beat UP Warriorz | Cricket News

It’s been a strange old start to Delhi Capitals’ Women’s Premier League campaign. They huffed and puffed over the line, quite literally when it came to crossing the crease, against Mumbai Indians. They were off colour for large parts against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. And despite playing well for a significant amount of the match against the UP Warriorz on Wednesday in Vadodara, they once again left it uncomfortably late. For a team that was arguably the strongest on paper before the tournament started, the start has been laboured, but having stumbled at the finish line for the first two years, maybe they are – as the cliche goes – looking to peak at the right time. And one of the more favourable signs in that regard was Meg Lanning’s most fluent knock of the tournament yet. With her signature off-side strokes, the captain struck a serene 69 off 49 balls, laced with 10 out of 12 boundaries coming on that side of the wicket, as DC beat UP Warriorz by 7 wickets to register their …

“I’ve Been Hung Out To Dry By England”: Ex-Player Drops Bombshell On Teammates, Takes This Star’s Name

“I’ve Been Hung Out To Dry By England”: Ex-Player Drops Bombshell On Teammates, Takes This Star’s Name

England’s Alex Hartley with teammates.© AFP Former England spinner turned broadcaster Alex Hartley has claimed that several senior players gave her cold shoulder and Sophie Ecclestone even refused a TV interview with her during the ongoing Women’s Ashes because she criticised fitness standards of a few players after their early exit from T20 World Cup. Having gone down in three ODIs and the opening T20, England have already lost the Ashes. Following England’s defeat in the opening T20 on January 20, Hartley said she was ignored by players. “Sophie Ecclestone refused to do a TV interview with me today,” she told the BBC’s TMS podcast. “I’ve been hung out to dry by the England team: none of them will talk to me on the boundary edge. “The reason I said that they were not as fit as Australia is because I want them to compete with Australia, I want them to be better than Australia, and I want them to win Ashes and World Cups. I’m giving my opinion, and I’ve been given …

England coach blames Women’s Premier League for ‘rammed’ Ashes schedule

England coach blames Women’s Premier League for ‘rammed’ Ashes schedule

In the space of just three weeks, the England women’s team will play three ODIs, three T20s and a four-day Test in Australia. The reason for the ‘rammed’ schedule, according to England coach Jon Lewis, is the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India. The women’s Ashes begins on January 12 in Sydney and will be played across five Australian cities. The WPL begins on February 21, forcing the authorities to compress England’s tour to Australia. Lewis was miffed with the cramped schedule, especially with a four-day gap between the third T20 and the four-day pink-ball Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. “My preference would be that there’s more space between the games, and the players’ preference would be as well,” Lewis was quoted as saying by The Guardian. “I’m pretty sure we would have requested more space between the white ball [games] and the Test match, but the schedule came back as it was. It won’t be straightforward. The schedule is pretty rammed close together. There’s no flexibility because of WPL and Christmas.” The report …

Women’s T20 World Cup: Six Players To Watch Out For

As the 10 teams prepare for the start of the 2024 T20 Women’s World Cup, here’s a look at six players who are at the forefront of their team’s hopes of lifting the trophy on October 20. Australia: Beth Mooney – The seasoned Australia opener is top of the ICC’s T20 batter rankings going into the World Cup and the six-time champions will be relying on her once again at the top of the order. A key member of the sides that won the last three editions of the T20 World Cup, Mooney was named ‘Player of the Series’ in 2020 after nailing an unbeaten 78 in the final as the Aussies saw off India. Having clattered 50 from 30 balls in the warm-up win over England in Dubai, there is every reason to think the 30-year-old is primed to add to her two T20I hundreds.  England: Sophie Ecclestone – The 25-year-old left-arm spinner from Cheshire made her international debut eight years ago. She is now the highest-ranked bowler in the ICC’s T20 …
