Shan Masood praises Babar Azam for stepping up to open when team lost Saim Ayub to injury at Newlands – India TV

Pakistan captain Shan Masood has heaped praise over Babar Azam‘s act of stepping up when the team lost opener Saim Ayub to injury in the second Test match against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town. Babar came to open for the first time in Test cricket after Saim suffered an ankle injury in the Newlands Test and got ruled out. The former Pakistan skipper scored back-to-back half-centuries in the Test to show he has been returning to form.  Babar, who had not hit a fifty-plus score since December 2022, made 50 in the second innings of the first Test in Centurion before hitting 58 and 81 in the Cape Town Test.  Pakistan skipper Masood has praised Babar for his act. “It was unfortunate that Babar got out to a shot that he plays really well. His character, stepping up and raising his hand when we lost Saim to open the innings and get back-to-back scores, those are things that pleases you more than anything. There have …

WATCH: Babar Azam loses cool after SA pacer Wiaan Mulder hits his foot with wild throw in Cape Town Test | Cricket News

With a Pakistan fightback slowly gaining momentum in the New Year’s Test at Newlands, tempers flared when South Afrcia seamer Wiaan Mulder and Babar Azam came up against each other on Sunday in Cape Town. After racking up a mammoth 615 and wiping out Pakistan for 194, the Proteas enforced the follow-on before skipper Shan Masood and Babar put on a riposte for the visitors. As Babar built on his first-innings half-century with another measured knock, Pakistan got themselves to a solid start with the duo putting on the highest opening stand for the side in Tests against South Africa. The pair surpassed the previous best of 137 between Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar for the first wicket against the Proteas in Faisalabad in 2003. However, Mulder was the first to lose his nerve when he came up against a nonchalant Babar in the 32nd over of Pakistan’s follow-on. After the 30-year-old Babar drove a ball back to the pacer, a frustrated Mulder soon grabbed the ball in his follow-through and hurled the ball back …

Ryan Rickelton becomes first South Africa Test opener to hit 250 at home, breaks records against Pakistan in Cape Town | Cricket News

Ryan Rickelton became the first South African opener to record a 250-plus score at home in the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday. Batting in his 17th Test innings, Rickelton’s marathon spanned over two days after South Africa opted to bat first. The 28-year-old finished the opening day with his second century on 176 and motored past the double hundred in the second session on Day 2 alongside centuries from skipper Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreyne. Rickelton reached his double hundred off 266 balls and moved up to 250 off 336 deliveries, after South Africa stormed past 550 against a hapless Pakistan attack. Rickelton thereby became the first Proteas opener to record a 250-plus Test score at home and the second overall after Graeme Smith, who recorded two double centuries in England in 2003. He is only the eighth South African batter to cross the 250-run mark in a Test innings, with Hashim Amla remaining as the only triple-centurion with his unbeaten 311 against England at the Oval in 2012. …

WATCH: Temba Bavuma refuses to take DRS after ball hits pocket, realises ‘brain fade’ dismissal in chat after South Africa win | Cricket News

South Africa sure had some jittery moments en route a thrilling two-wicket win against Pakistan on Sunday to seal their World Test Championship final berth in Centurion and captain Temba Bavuma’s unusual dismissal did not help the nerves in the dressing-room before a humdinger finish. Chasing 148, a well-set Bavuma was the fifth man to fall before Mohammad Abbas’ relentless spell left South Africa on the edge. Though Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen’s eight-wicket bravado powered a famous Proteas win, Bavuma’s bizarre dismissal raised eyebrows. Abbas appeared to initially dismiss Bavuma with a delivery angling in as it passed the inside-edge of Bavuma’s bat to wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan. Batting on 40, Bavuma decided against a DRS review as he trudged back to the pavillion. South Africa qualify for ICC World Test Championship final, beat Pakistan by 2 wickets to book Lord’s 2025 ticket | Cricket News

South Africa became the first team to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship final of the 2023-25 cycle as they overcame Pakistan by two wickets in the first Test at Centurion on Sunday. After crumbling to 99 for eight in a 148-run chase after Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas’ six-wicket burst, South Africa held their nerve with an unbeaten 50-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen. The win elevated the Proteas to 88 points from 11 games this cycle, boosting their points percentage (PCT) to 66.67 ahead of Australia (58.89) and India (55.89), who are currently locked 1-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With South Africa booking the ticket to the final, to be held at Lord’s between June 11-15 next year, only India and Australia remain in contention to book the other vacant spot. South Africa are the fourth team to make the WTC final after India (2021 and 2023), defending champions Australia (2023) and inaugural winners New Zealand (2021). South Africa’s WTC 2023-25 campaign began with a 1-1 home …

How can India qualify for WTC final 2025 if they lose/draw Melbourne Test vs Australia? Qualification scenarios explained | Cricket News

India’s ICC World Test Championship final qualification chances seem to grow slimmer as they feature in the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Falling behind in the Boxing Day Test by a considerable margin within the first two days, it is highly improbably for India to fashion a win from the current position. The other two remaining outcomes will mean India’s WTC 2025 final chances will hit a major roadblock before the New Year’s Test in Sydney, starting January 3. India’s WTC points percentage (PCT) slipped from 57.29 to 55.88 after the draw in Brisbane last week. Rohit Sharma’s remained in the third spot on the WTC standings, behind Australia (58.89) and South Africa (63.33), who are poised to secure their berth in next year’s final at Lord’s if they beat Pakistan this week in the ongoing Test at Centurion. Can India qualify for WTC final if they lose or draw Melbourne Test? Only eight points, equivalent to two draws, separate Australia and India on the WTC standings. While India …

PAK vs SA: Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique becomes first player not to score a single run in a series | Cricket News

Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique has bagged an unwanted record during the side’s three-match ODI series against South Africa by getting out for ducks in all the matches. He is the first batsman to do so in the game’s history. The third duck in Johannesburg also ensured that he is the Pakistan opener with the most number of ducks in a calendar year. In 2024, the 25-year-old registered seven ducks across 21 innings. Shafique has surpassed the previous tally of Imran Nazir who had six ducks across 32 innings in 2000 and Mohammed Hafeez the same number of ducks from 43 innings in 2012. However, the world record for most number of ducks in a calendar year is eight which is held by Herschelle Gibbs in 2002 from 51 innings and Tillakaratne Dilshan in 2012 from 56 innings. Cleansweep Pakistan completed a 3-0 sweep of its ODI series against South Africa, winning the third match by 36 runs under the DLS method. Opener Saim Ayub hit 101 runs in 94 balls as Pakistan scored 308-9 at …
