Chennai, The Southern Railway on Sunday highlighted its achievements from last financial year, which was marked by major expansion of services across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka The expansion included the rollout of 23 new train services originating from or terminating in Tamil Nadu alone, alongside 14 in Kerala and five in Karnataka, with several shared services benefiting more than one state. Chennai/Kochi, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said the Southern Railway will double train capacity in Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and Ernakulam in Kerala by 2030 to meet the growing demand. This move will upgrade our railway network and improve nationwide connectivity,” a press release issued by Southern Railway quoted the minister as saying. The strategy addresses rapid travel growth through additional platforms, stabling lines, new terminals, maintenance facilities and multi-tracking, it said. According to railway sources, on the night of April 8, Bibin Joseph was manning a goods train bound for Mangaluru in Palghat Division when he received an SOS from his pregnant wife that she had developed labour pain. However, he continued to run the train for about three hours till it reached the destination and completed his duty. After handing over the locomotive to the authorities concerned, he informed the Crew Controller about his wife’s condition and gave a request for leave. Since he was on duty, his mobile was on switch off mode. It was only at a scheduled stop that he noticed that his wife was trying to reach him since evening, the sources said. Chennai/New Delhi: At least 12 coaches of a long-distance express train derailed after it rammed into a stationary goods train at Kavarapettai in Tamil Nadu on Friday night, Southern Railway officials said, and added that there were no casualties and or life-threatening injuries reported after the accident.
