The officials said that the Lebanese troops involved will be trained and vetted by the United States to ensure they are not linked to Iran-backed Hezbollah, while Israel will keep a military presence in a border buffer zone. The proposed “pilot” project is being discussed and is in the latest rounds of talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials, which began in Washington on Tuesday. The truce came after Israeli strikes reportedly killed dozens in southern Lebanon and four Israeli soldiers were killed before the ceasefire took effect. The Israeli military said it had struck 80 Hezbollah targets and killed dozens of fighters. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, nearly 4,000 people have been killed and about one million displaced since March 2026. Chennai, The Southern Railway on Sunday highlighted its achievements from last financial year, which was marked by major expansion of services across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka The expansion included the rollout of 23 new train services originating from or terminating in Tamil Nadu alone, alongside 14 in Kerala and five in Karnataka, with several shared services benefiting more than one state. The awards, conferred by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj annually, recognise outstanding local rural bodies across the country for their contribution towards the Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) and excellence in grassroots governance. The performance of the local bodies is assessed through the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI), which evaluates panchayats across governance, infrastructure, livelihoods, social justice, environment, and women empowerment indicators. This year, 42 panchayats from 17 states and union territories were selected for the two categories of awards – Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) and Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (NDSPSVP). A damaged chemical tank in Southern California may have cracked — potentially lowering the risk of a cataclysmic explosion — though an evacuation order remains in effect for some 50,000 area residents with no timeline on when they can return, a fire official said Sunday. Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Wayhowe Huang said officials will be continuing to evaluate the tank Sunday after emergency crews spotted the potential crack overnight. As of Sunday morning, he said it does not appear that any of the highly volatile chemicals in the tank have leaked. “There’s still the danger of a possible explosion. MURALI KUMAR The National Green Tribunal’s Southern Zone bench in Chennai has directed all six southern States and Puducherry to ensure “strict and time-bound implementation” of their State Action Plans (SAP) under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), in a common judgment that flags persistent particulate pollution across the region and warns that continued under-utilisation of clean air funds could attract environmental compensation. The tribunal recorded that Karnataka had received ₹597.54 crore between 2019-20 and 2023-24, with Bengaluru alone receiving ₹541.1 crore but utilising only 13% by October 2024. A subsequent affidavit submitted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change reported that 76% of total funds released up to 2025-26 had been utilised by September 2025. However, the bench flagged that more than 86% of utilised funds went to road dust control, with just 6.6% on vehicular emissions and 4.1% on biomass burning — describing this as “disproportionate expenditure” that must be “rationalised”. The suspension was announced through a statement issued by the association on Friday. “It has been confirmed before the Association’s Executive Committee that film editor Mr Pradeep E Ragav has been using non-members of the Association as assistants for all the films he has worked on, including Jana Nayagan, without respecting the rules and regulations of the Association,” the statement read. The Union government on Tuesday allayed fears that the delimitation process, which will be carried out for the implementation of 33% women’s reservation in legislatures by 2029, will be politically disadvantageous to the southern states, adding that seats will be fairly distributed across regions.
