Delhi’s art scene expands: New galleries, bigger spaces | News Today News

4 min readNew DelhiMay 30, 2026 01:09 PM IST In the leafy and largely residential Safdarjung Enclave neighbourhood, the multistorey Anant Art Gallery stands out as a distinctive arts destination. Operating out of Noida for more than four years — before which it called several other neighbourhoods across the Capital home — it opened this flagship space in the heart of Delhi, designed by Studio Lotus, only earlier this year. With a group exhibition titled ‘Reverie. Pause. ‘Rupture,’ curated by Gayatri Sinha on view recently, the space also hosted a two-day curatorial forum in March, discussing experiences and perspectives of practitioners engaged within the arts. “We wanted an experiential gallery where viewers would be encouraged to discover art and not follow a prescribed path,” says Mamta Singhania, founder-director of Anant Art. She also intends to open a cafeteria and book-reading corner at the gallery. She adds, “Young collectors today don’t just acquire art for investment, they are looking for works that resonate with them and want to spend time understanding and browsing art.” In a …

Shrinking shared spaces in a growing cityscape

Shrinking shared spaces in a growing cityscape

Four years ago, Halley Kalyan moved from Moti Nagar to a gated community in Manikonda for a reason that had little to do with luxury or status. In a rapidly changing Hyderabad, the 40-year-old product manager simply wanted his seven-year-old daughter to have a safe place to ride a bicycle. Back in Moti Nagar, learning to cycle was proving to be a task. Their apartment block had little space beyond a cramped parking area packed with vehicles. Outside, speeding traffic left no safe stretch for a child to wobble through her first cycling lessons. “For days, I struggled to take her out. There was no safe stretch, no open space. Something as basic as cycling became difficult,” he recalls. Today, those worries feel distant. Every evening, his daughter cycles through parks and paved tracks within the residential complex before walking to her Kuchipudi class held in the compound itself. Families gather near the clubhouse, children spill into open spaces and residents move about without stepping onto a busy road. But for Kalyan, the move also …

Since 2017, cases of SCs denied access to public spaces on the rise with lion’s share in U.P.

Since 2017, cases of SCs denied access to public spaces on the rise with lion’s share in U.P.

Reported cases of denial of access to public spaces to persons from Scheduled Caste communities — a crime category that was introduced in 2017 by the National Crime Records Bureau — have been rising across India since law enforcement authorities started recording them, with an increasing share of these crimes consistently being reported in Uttar Pradesh. From the latest available set of crime data in the NCRB’s 2023 Crime in India report, there were 180 reported cases of SCs being denied access to public spaces under the Prevention of Atrocities (SC/ST) Act across the country. Of these, 173 cases were reported in U.P. alone, with the other cases that year coming from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. NCRB’s data for the year before, 2022, showed that the country reported 305 cases of SCs being denied access to public spaces, of which 300, or 98.36%, were from U.P. In a report released earlier this year, the National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR) had said that an increase in such cases “reflected entrenched …

Lack of open spaces puts strain on sporting culture| India News

Lack of open spaces puts strain on sporting culture| India News

As availability of open plots in Bengaluru has contracted over the past three decades, the question of who can afford to play sport has moved from the margins to the centre of civic debate. A December 2025 proposal to convert Bengaluru’s famed Nandan Ground to a turf facility-cum-stadium sparked backlash. (HT PHOTO) Public playgrounds that once functioned as free training grounds for neighbourhood youth are increasingly neglected or earmarked for “upgrades” that introduce fees, while private turf arenas, orderly, lit and bookable, have become the dependable alternative for those able to pay. The strain is visible at Nandan Ground in Austin Town, one of the city’s oldest open playing fields and long associated with the early development of football in Bengaluru. The ground has produced prominent Olympic and national-level footballers, including Sarangapani Raman, T. Shanmugham, Muhammad Kannayan and Berland Anthony, and for decades it operated without barriers, allowing anyone to join a game. “In public grounds, there will be more people and we can play with anyone,” said Rajiv, a volleyball player who spends his …

Chennai: Newly revamped Connemara Library offers better spaces for book lovers, researchers

The School Education Department and the Public Works Department added more sections inside the art-deco building after the restoration. | Photo Credit: S.R. Raghunathan A space meant to store records has now become an interesting science park with STEM activities including a gyroscope, large-sized periodic table, and a touch screen teaching the human anatomy, at the Connemara Public Library, located inside the Government Museum campus in Egmore. Thanks to judicious use of existing space, the School Education Department and the Public Works Department have been able to add more sections inside the art-deco building that was recently restored at a cost of ₹4.58 crore. The own-book reading section, that allows people to bring their own books to read, and a civil service section, where students preparing for competitive exams can read in peace, are attractions for college students. Aravindan, a student preparing for his chartered accountancy exam, said he liked the ambience. The peppy children’s books section features interesting decor that young children will find comfortable for curling up with a book from the wide …

Vanishing balconies in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru: Here’s why urban homes are forced to shrink open spaces

Vanishing balconies in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru: Here’s why urban homes are forced to shrink open spaces

As buildings touch the skies, apartment sizes shrink, and towers get packed so tightly that a neighbour just a few feet away can peer straight into your living room, the once-simple pleasure of stepping out for a quiet cup of tea on the balcony is steadily losing its charm. Worsening air quality, particularly in NCR and Mumbai, along with perennial mosquito problems, are making balcony living far less appealing. For most urban residents, what was once a desirable feature is fast fading into memory. Balconies are shrinking or disappearing from mid-segment homes in Bengaluru and NCR, reflecting a shift toward luxury-focused designs. (Photo for representative purposes only) (Pixabay) A clear trend emerging across cities such as Bengaluru and the NCR is that balconies are shrinking in size, vanishing from mid-segment homes, and increasingly being reserved for high-end developments. Experts say this shift reflects growing buyer awareness about what they are actually paying for within their homes. Balconies are no longer standard inclusions; they are evolving into aspirational features typically associated with luxury apartments. In NCR …
