The newly-formed Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) held its first meeting on Monday and passed a resolution requiring non-Hindus employed by the board to either take voluntary retirement or opt for a transfer to other government departments in Andhra Pradesh. Notably, the TTD is an independent government trust that manages Tirumala Venkateswara temple in Tirupati – the world’s richest Hindu shrine. The major decisions taken by the TTD include setting up a panel of experts to suggest an action plan to reduce darshan time at Tirumala’s Lord Venkateswara temple to two-three hours, a ban on making political statements there, procurement of superior quality ghee for laddoo preparation and and transferring non-Hindus. The Congress Thursday lodged complaints with the EC against PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for allegedly making “false” and “divisive” speeches during the Jharkhand and Maharashtra Assembly polls. In the case of the PM, Congress alleged that he had made “false, malicious and slanderous statements” targeting the party and its allies during a speech in Nashik on November 8. The CPI(M) on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of making “communal” remarks in poll-bound Jharkhand and asked the Election Commission (EC) to take action against them for “violating the Model Code of Conduct”. In a statement issued after a three-day meeting of its central committee concluded in New Delhi, the party alleged that PM Modi had directly vilified members of the Muslim community by calling them “ghuspethias (infiltrators)”. Both BJP and Congress have asked for additional time, seven and 14 days respectively, to reply to the Election Commission’s notices to them regarding speeches by their star campaigners Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi respectively, sources said Monday. The EC had issued notices to BJP president J P Nadda and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on April 25 with reference to the Model Code of Conduct complaints against the Prime Minister and the Congress MP respectively. Both party presidents had been asked to respond by 11 am on Monday. As per EC sources, BJP replied to the EC before the deadline, seeking one week’s time to respond. The Congress on Monday morning first asked the EC till 5 pm to respond, and later sought 14 days time, sources said. Separately, the poll panel also issued a notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, asking him to respond to the complaints filed by the BJP against him Rahul Gandhi regarding their remarks. In the notice sent to Nadda, the EC sought his response by Monday to the complaints filed by the Congress, CPI, CPI (ML) and civil society groups regarding the remarks made by Modi.
