What’s Bad: Some things don’t make total sense plotwise, and that might mess with some people’s enjoyment. Disclosure Day: This Steven Spielberg alien mystery is buried beneath a long chase and some poignant questions

When it’s Steven Spielberg, he can sell us anything. A killer shark in Jaws. Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. And, of course, aliens! From ET to Disclosure Day, the man can make us believe in almost anything. Which is why, even as an ardent admirer of the filmmaker, I came away slightly underwhelmed by his latest directorial. A still from Disclosure Day For reasons she cannot explain, meteorologist Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) begins experiencing strange abilities after a cardinal visits her home. She can suddenly read people’s minds and even alter what they see when they look into her eyes. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) is on the run after stealing a series of tapes containing evidence of what really happened to the extraterrestrial beings who landed on Earth. Pursuing them both is Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), the powerful head of Wardex. Why these two seemingly unrelated individuals are inexorably drawn towards each other forms the crux of the film. The film begins at a brisk pace and immediately …

Disclosure Day movie review: A gripping Steven Spielberg spectacle | Movie-review News

3 min readJun 12, 2026 02:50 PM IST Disclosure Day movie review: Disclosure Day rolls out smoothly and fully formed from the atelier of the great Steven Spielberg, with humanity – once again – discovering itself in the face of the divine and the unknown. Spielberg himself has described it as the closest to his film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Disclosure Day perhaps dabbles most evidently with the question of God and aliens. And because it’s Spielberg, what you see is what you get. There is talk of a government-military-industrial nexus, but it is suggestive of an older time, not now, when the President’s family and the biggest weapons profiteers are in bed together without raising a scandal. There is talk of “empathy as humanity’s evolutionary advantage”, but nothing about why and where and how fast it is eroding. The only aliens in Spielberg’s film are the ones that come from outer space, and they are the same big-headed, slender-limbed, bug-eyed creatures he favours; the director clearly hasn’t spotted the ones closer …

I approached Cubby Broccoli after ‘Jaws’ was a big hit. I’d always wanted to make a James Bond film from the day I saw ‘Dr. No’, so I called Cubby Broccoli after ‘Jaws’ and volunteered. I said, ‘If you need a director, I would love to direct one.’ And he said no and he moved on.” The “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” director then pitched himself again after the release of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” when Broccoli reached out to him asking to use the film’s iconic five-note musical melody in a …

I don’t believe there is any substitute for the soul. I don’t think that is an algorithm that’s inventible… A computer that thinks it feels more than we feel is anathema to the way I was …
