Sudden April heat spike leaves Delhi unprepared, doctors warn of rising risks

Sudden April heat spike leaves Delhi unprepared, doctors warn of rising risks

While summers in north India normally build gradually, allowing the human body to adjust over weeks, the transition to extreme heat has been abrupt this year, leaving little room for biological adaptation and putting people at higher risk of heat-related illnesses, warned experts. Heat arrives too soon, increasing risk of heatstroke and dehydration (Representative/Freepik) “High temperatures arriving earlier than usual put a strain on the body’s ability to acclimatise to hot weather, a phenomenon called seasonal or heat acclimatisation,” said Dr Mugdha Tapdiya, director of internal medicine at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj. Under normal conditions, repeated exposure to heat over days or weeks triggers a series of physical responses: the body begins to sweat earlier and more efficiently, heart rate under heat stress reduces, and the system becomes better at maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance. This physiological adaptation, referred to as heat acclimatisation, typically takes about one to two weeks of progressive exposure. Amid record demand surge, why India’s power grid faces night peak stress due to outages as spot electricity prices spike | Explained News

Amid record demand surge, why India’s power grid faces night peak stress due to outages as spot electricity prices spike | Explained News

As soaring temperatures push India’s peak power consumption to record highs, the stress on the grid is becoming most pronounced at night, when nearly 150 GW (giga watt, or 1000 mega watts) of solar capacity goes offline after sundown. Data from the Grid Controller of India (Grid India) shows that there has been a shortage in meeting peak demand the past few days during non-solar hours, which typically refers to the period between 6 PM and 6 AM, when solar generation is not available. During this period, the system usually relies on conventional sources such as coal, gas, hydro, nuclear and wind to meet demand. Peak demand figures, whether daily or monthly, are largely statistical reference points, as they reflect the highest load recorded at any moment during a given period on a particular day, often for a brief duration. On Saturday — when the peak demand surged to record high of 256 GW — there was a peak shortfall of around 4.2 GW at 10:39 PM, Grid India data shows. A day earlier, on …

‘6.6% votes, 86% seats by force’: BJP sees Rajya Sabha seats spike in Punjab, but assembly polls remain a challenge

‘6.6% votes, 86% seats by force’: BJP sees Rajya Sabha seats spike in Punjab, but assembly polls remain a challenge

When six of AAP’s seven Punjab Rajya Sabha MPs walked into the BJP last week, they handed the party something it had never achieved in Punjab through elections alone — a dominant presence in the Upper House of Parliament from a state it has never won on its own. Assembly elections are next due in about 10 months. Rajya Sabha MPs Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal being escorted into the BJP HQ by the party’s senior leader Tarun Chugh, in New Delhi last week. (ANI Video Grab) The numbers are stark. In the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, the BJP secured 6.6% of the vote and won two of 117 seats, when the AAP won 92 and removed the Congress from power. This was after decades that the BJP was not in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The Congress got 18 seats, the SAD just three, with the BJP following with two, and the rest of smaller parties or independents. The BJP thus sent no Rajya Sabha members from Punjab. Its prominent …

Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, recorded an 18 per cent spike on the fifth Tuesday. Dhurandhar 2 not just recorded better footfalls than Monday but was also on par with Saturday.  The Ranveer Singh directorial took its fifth week’s cume to Rs. 14.85 crore in 5 days. It is expected to close this week, around Rs. 18 crore or so. The running cume of Dhurandhar: The Revenge currently stands at Rs. 960.10 crore nett at the Indian box office.  Backed by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, the spy action drama will cross the Rs. 965 crore mark in its sixth weekend, and then it will march towards the Rs. 975 crore mark. To cross the Rs. 1000 crore nett mark in Hindi, the movie will need to add Rs. 25 crore more from there on. That seems difficult so …
