20 new national records in three months: Behind Indian athletics’ winning run | Sport-others News

Three new men’s 100 metres records in two days; men’s 400 metres in sub-45 seconds; 8,000-point barrier crossed in decathlon; a five-decade-old marathon record down from 2 hours, 12 minutes to 2 hours, 11 minutes and 58 seconds. In just over three months, from the end of February until early June, Indian records in athletics were broken 20 times. It’s happening across age groups, too. Nineteen-year-old Pooja Singh rewrote a 14-year-old women’s high jump record, 31-year-old Parul Chaudhary bettered her mark in the 5,000 metres. And half-a-dozen indoor marks have also been improved. Athletics Federation of India (AFI) spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla predicts a good show at the upcoming Commonwealth Games and the Asiad. “We have found cracks  in the dam, in time the dam will break. We moved to 29 medals at the Asian Games (in 2023). Now it is only a matter of time,” Sumariwalla said. The records did not happen by accident. The AFI’s decentralisation model, introduced after the 2024 Olympics, which gave athletes freedom to train outside the national camp, played a …

From standing knee-deep in sand as a child to India’s fastest quarter-miler | Sport-others News

4 min readRanchiMay 26, 2026 06:49 AM IST Thirteen years back, when Thennarasu took his son, Vishal T K, to a stadium in Jolarpet town in Tamil Nadu, it wasn’t to make him a runner. His son had trouble walking since he was born with knock knees. Thennarasu, a dairy farmer who had played football for the state, had heard that burying his child’s legs knee-deep in the long jump pit could help straighten them. When at the stadium, after his daily stand-pit ritual, Vishal would sit and watch long-distance runners. Then one day, he joined them and thus began his track and field journey. On Saturday in Ranchi, Vishal, 23, crossed the 400m finish line in 44.98 seconds — the first Indian in history to go below 45. Thennarasu raced onto the track and the two embraced. “What I felt after he crossed the finish line can’t be expressed in words,” Thennarasu said. “Not even in my dreams.” He paused. “But when he started progressing and doing well, I could see he had a …

3 min readMay 2, 2026 09:28 PM IST Indian sprinters and quarter milers had a disappointing outing at the World Athletics Relays as all five quartets fail to move beyond their heats and secure World Championships 2027 berths on Saturday. While the Indian teams will have another shot at the World Championships qualification, the results were disappointing from the Indian perspective. The men’s 4x400m team came closest by clocking season best timing of 3:00.32 and finishing 12th overall. The quartet of Dharmveer Choudhary, Rajesh, Ramesh, Vishal TK, and Manu TS led the race in the second and third leg but failed to close it out. Rajesh and national record holder Vishal ran their heart out in the second and third legs respectively. However, Manu’s inexperience was visible in the final leg as he got boxed in the inside lane and crossed the finish line at the fourth place. The top two teams in each of the three heats and the next two quickest advance to the finals on day two, while also securing their qualification …

4 min readApr 27, 2026 10:33 PM IST Eyeing a comeback after nearly 20 months, Vinesh Phogat claimed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) was ‘deliberately’ creating hurdles for her, a charge the governing body refuted. Vinesh, who walked away from the sport after the Paris Olympics heartbreak, said she was preparing to return for next month’s National Open Ranking tournament. However, she has not been able to register for the competition after the WFI portal said the registrations are closed. According to a WFI circular dated April 8, the last date for entry is April 30. The Ranking tournament is scheduled to take place from May 10 to 12 at the Nandininagar Mahavidyalaya in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Sabastian Sawe storms marathon’s 2 hour-bastion in 1:59.30: with 97 gms shoes and after submitting to prolific drug testing | Sport-others News

Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe (pronounced: saw-way) became the fastest marathon runner in history, the first human to break the two-hour barrier in the 42.195 kilometer race at the London Marathon on Sunday. His feat clicked at 1:59.30 will rank alongside man on the moon, conquering Mount Everest and the Bannister Mile. His name will be on the shortlist of greatest athletes ever. He may also be in the running to be the cleanest athlete in the world. Kenya, a power house of distance running, has earned a bad reputation because of the number of dope cheats. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), an independent anti-doping watchdog sanctioned nearly 150 Kenyan athletes since its inception nearly a decade ago. Or in other words one-third of the total athletes caught for doping violations by the AIU. Sawe wanted to remove doubts if and when he broke the world record. So his team approached the AIU, asking to be tested as many times as possible. By all accounts, he was tested 25 times before last year’s Berlin Marathon, known to …

How Fernando Mendoza, NFL Draft’s top pick, was shaped by his mother, who is fighting multiple sclerosis | Sport-others News

Fernando Mendoza could be the next big thing in the NFL. At least the Las Vegas Raiders believe so. Which is why, in a field of 257 available players, the Raiders snapped up Mendoza as their first pick on Thursday night. It was a remarkable journey for Mendoza who was ranked 2,149th player in the class of 2022 when it emerged from high school. Even in that list, Mendoza was the 140th quarterback. And today, he’s the first pick. Unlike other players known to be picked first in the NFL Draft, Mendoza was not at the venue in Pittsburgh for the NFL Draft. He stayed at home in Miami with his family. To be alongside his mother, Elsa Mendoza, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) 19 years ago, but only told her sons about the diagnosis a decade later. To understand what Elsa means to Fernando, one has to travel back in time to the day when his fate as the first Draft pick was more or less sealed: when he led Indiana to …
