“Invest in grassroots now for success at the 2036 Olympics”: PR Sreejesh

Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh has emphasized the urgent need for grassroots investment and talent identification to build a strong foundation for India’s sporting future. Speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, the double Olympic medallist stressed that preparation for the 2036 Olympics must begin now. Sreejesh, who retired after India’s bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics, highlighted that exposure to top-level competition is crucial for young athletes. “Exposure is the key. Getting into the world level and performing from there is the dream. The Olympics come with immense mental pressure, and preparing athletes for that is most important,” he said. He believes that India’s recent sporting success can inspire young athletes, but structural development at the grassroots remains a challenge. While India has a strong national-level player base, Sreejesh pointed out that talent identification at the nursery and grassroots levels needs improvement. “If we are talking about the 2036 Olympics, we need to start working with kids aged 12-14 today. That’s where the investment should go,” he stated. He stressed that …

World Para Athletics Grand Prix: For India’s wheelchair racers, hurdles are off the track too | Sport-others News

Wednesday was a red-letter day for wheelchair racers Manikandan Jothi and Manoj Sabapathi at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi. The Tamil Nadu para athletes finished 1-2 on the podium in the men’s 400 metre (T54) final, only the second time they have medalled at an international event. “It feels good to finish on the podium. A medal at an event like a Grand Prix is important for ranking points,” Manikandan told The Indian Express after his event. Wheelchair racing comes with its set of hurdles; from lack of spare parts and service centres in India, and an expensive racing cycle. India has a handful of wheelchair racers with not more than 20 competing at the Nationals. Wheelchair racing wasn’t Manikandan’s first choice. Hockey: In Kukuda’s Sunelita Toppo and Sonepat’s Sakshi Rana, two teenage hopes for India’s future | Hockey News

Sunelita Toppo is on the move, and four Germans are running to stop her. A pass is played in her direction from the right flank and even before it reaches her, the puny attacker is surrounded by the quartet in pink, each one at least a head taller than her. On the run, Sunelita opens up her body to receive the ball. In a single motion, she cuts left to eliminate one opponent, then shuffles to the right and changes direction to wrong-foot two more. It opens up enough space to thread a forward pass. Just like that, another raid on Germany’s defence was launched. For those fleeting few seconds, it was easy to forget that Sunelita was all of 17. By the time she’ll legally be an adult, Sunelita could well be a ‘veteran’ on the hockey field. Within a year of her debut at the age of 16, she has made more than two dozen international appearances.
