Kerala HC directs State Police Chief to form special squads for hit-and-run cases

The court expressed concern over the increasing number of hit-and-run cases remaining unresolved due to lack of attention by law enforcement agencies. The Kerala High Court on Monday (July 20, 2026) directed the State Police Chief to constitute special squads in every district to track and apprehend offenders in hit-and-run cases. The police force in the State has been directed to work together and alert the special squads in tracing such vehicles and drivers.  The court expressed concern over the increasing number of hit-and-run cases remaining unresolved due to lack of attention by law enforcement agencies. A Single Bench of Justice G. Girish was considering a batch of petitions by victims in hit-and-run cases from Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. In all the cases, the petitioners sought directions for high-ranking police officials to investigate the offending vehicle and drivers who had caused severe casualties to their lives.  The court also considered the “ineffectiveness” of the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2021 introduced by the Central government. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) on Sunday confirmed that Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy have been ruled out of the upcoming ODIs against England and the T20Is against Zimbabwe. Harshit has been replaced by Prince Yadav in the ODI team, while Chakaravarthy will be replaced by Ravi Bishnoi in the T20I side. Harshit Rana ruled out of upcoming England ODIs and Zimbabwe T20Is. With less than 40 days left for the Commonwealth Games 2026, countries have started announcing their squads for the event. India has also begun unveiling its contingent for the Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23rd to August 2nd. This year’s Commonwealth Games will feature only 10 sports. The reduced programme comes after the original host, the Australian state of Victoria, withdrew from hosting the event in 2023 due to financial concerns. Scotland later stepped in and opted for a smaller and more cost-effective edition of the Games. The 10 sports at Glasgow 2026 are: Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, 3×3 Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball, Boxing, Track Cycling and Para Cycling, Artistic Gymnastics, Judo, Lawn Bowls and Para Bowls, Netball, and Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting.
