Rising squash star Veer Chotrani’s inspiration is father Manish, a former national champion | Sport-others News

3 min readMar 20, 2026 10:59 PM IST All the technology in the world now and the internet teeming with squash videos. But Veer Chotrani can’t stop looking for that one video that shows his father Manish Chotrani becoming India’s national champion 25 years ago. Conversations over the years have helped him tease out strands of what his father’s game might’ve been like at its peak in Mumbai. The youngster, who made the semifinals of the JSW Indian Open on Friday beating Egyptian Mohamed Sharaf 11-9, 11-8, 11-2, however takes the legacy forward. “I never watched him at his peak. I try to find videos but just can’t. But the game has changed a lot,” he says. “It’s more physical and explosive. My dad played with wooden racquets that used to be heavier, now lighter ones can generate more power,” he adds. The Tour runs deeper, so there’s more players at a very high level in Top 50, and the sport is in Olympics. But he remembers being around a squash court for as long …

Anahat sets up semifinal with Tanvi

Anahat Singh registered a comfortable victory win in the women’s singles quarter-finals to set up an all-India semi-final clash against Tanvi Khanna at the 2026 Indian Open PSA Copper event on Friday. Up against Sehveetrraa Kumar of Malaysia in the quarter-finals, Anahat registered a straightforward 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 win in straight games to enter the final four. The top seeded Anahat is expected to start as the favourite in the semi-finals against Khanna, who beat the fourth seeded Ainaa Amani of Malaysia 11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8 earlier in the day. Meanwhile, veteran Joshna Chinappa was ousted in the women’s singles quarter-finals after falling to a 8-11, 11-8, 6-11, 1-11 loss at the hands of 19-year-old Nadien Elhammamy of Egypt. Elsewhere in men’s singles, both the Indians in contention – Abhay Singh and Veer Chotrani – won their respective matches to advance to the semi-finals. #News | Abhay Singh advances to semi-finals of Indian Open 2026👏 Earlier, Anahat Singh, Veer Chotrani, and Tanvi Khanna had also won their respective quarter-final matches, making it 4 Indians in …

Meet Nadien el Hammamy, the teenaged daughter of a glass artist who paints four walls of the squash court with creative racquet-work | Sport-others News

Meet Nadien el Hammamy, the teenaged daughter of a glass artist who paints four walls of the squash court with creative racquet-work | Sport-others News

They don’t make glass slippers for princesses in Egypt. Over the last decade, Egypt’s women squash players hit a small black crazy ball as hard as they could against three glass walls and create a winning din. Nadien el Hammamy is the latest in a long jostling line of players, though her connection to fortified glass started much earlier. Her father Walid Onsy is one of Egypt’s most renowned artists, known for his paintings on fused glass. Starting with one piece a day in a solitary kiln, experimenting with glass and colours, he now creates masterpieces that shimmer on the walls of the rich and influential. “His art is very special and unique. Not many in Egypt do it. So I was inspired by his creativity,” Nadien says, having taken after his father to study graphic design, alongside playing squash. Art flows in Egyptian squash too, and Amr Shabana (a sort of Roger Federer within glass courts) is a massive inspiration for Nadien besides current World No.1 Hania el Hammamy. It took an entire nation …

Anahat Singh, India’s brightest squash talent, working on inculcating discipline to augment her exciting shot-making | Sport-others News

Because Anahat Singh played badminton in her early years, India’s finest young squash talent goes into important matches against the skilled Egyptians with equally wristy deception. Headlining the JSW India Open starting on Wednesday, the 18-year-old talks instead about needing to get the boring parts right: hitting the ball back straight to keep rallies going. “I used to play badminton since I was five, so deception is ingrained in my game. I need to practise the opposite! Hitting it back,” the World No.20 explains ahead of her title defence. Her French Coach Gregory Gaultier, a former World Open champion, also had a game full of disguises. “When we train, he makes sure I’m fitter and if I play well in one match, I stay consistent,” she adds. Anahat, in her last year on the junior circuit, is keen to nail down the British Juniors and World Juniors titles. “I’ve never won anything better than a bronze at the Jr Worlds. I’ve realised my mistakes from the last few Worlds and know I won’t have a …

Gregory Gaultier, Anahat Singh’s coach, on what it took to win Worlds gold after four stinging final defeats

Gregory Gaultier, Anahat Singh’s coach, on what it took to win Worlds gold after four stinging final defeats

Gregory Gaultier won four silver medals at the squash World Open (Championships) over 10 years, before he struck his first gold. In an illustrious career spanning 22 long years, starting out as a French prodigy, he ended with nine Worlds medals, including four bronze. Now, tasked with guiding young Indian talent Anahat Singh, the deep-thinking Frenchman brings a unique understanding of losing from winning positions and, learning from those defeats and never letting go of the ambition, before the gold is finally nailed. The 43-year-old would reckon ‘choke’ is a very English word, and in a very Albert Camus-fashion embraces the absurdity of keeping on losing, while keeping on wanting to win, in a way that only sport could quantify. “Today, if I flashback that first hard loss of a Worlds final in 2006, I’ll ask myself, ‘Gregory, if you had won that final, would life have turned out the same? Would I have done it all’?” he wonders, in an interaction before heading to India for the JSW Open in Mumbai, where Anahat will …

Attacking instinct, Analytical mind – Anahat Singh’s coach explains what sets her apart

The youngest Asian to break into top-20 world rankings in squash, Anahat Singh is one of the most improved Indian athletes in recent times. At just 17, she is making the transition from juniors to senior level look rather seamless. She clinched her first PSA Copper title last year before winning her first PSA Bronze level title at the Squash on Fire open last month. It was here that she took down world No 10 Georgina Kennedy in straight games in the final and broke into the top-20 of world rankings – only the third Indian woman to achieve the feat after Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal. Working behind the scenes, playing a vital role in Anahat’s rapid rise is Frenchman Gregory Gaultier. A former world champion and nine-time world championships medallist, Gaultier is widely regarded as one of the best minds in the world of squash. “I first met her during a camp in India, when she was just 13 or 14,” recalled Gaultier in a conversation with The Bridge. “Her level was surprising …
