Sreeja failed to convert her 2-1 lead in this first-round match against Kuai and faced a hard-fought defeat in five games (11-9, 10-12, 11-7, 5-11, 2-11) at the Inspire Arena. Sreeja Akula started the day for India on a positive note as she claimed a straight game 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-4) victory in her opening women’s singles group match against Qatar’s Aia Mohamed. The young Indian completely dominated the match and Aia had no answers to Sreeja’s aggressive play and only managed 16 points from the match. The prestigious continental competition will see a total of six Indians – three each in men’s singles and women’s singles – in contention. The Asian Cup is a prestigious individual tournament, which was first held in the year 1983. In 33 editions of the competition since – the last of which was held in 2022 – India have won just three medals.
