Marulasiddaradhya has appealed to all stakeholders to join hands to eradicate the practice from its root. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a World Day Against Child Labour function in Yadgir on Friday. He stressed that legal action should be initiated against those who are responsible for child labour. Necessary awareness should be created among parents who are forced to allow their children to take up labour, he said. “Law not only prevents child labour but also hands out punishment accordingly if a citizen is found using children aged below 14 years as labour,” the judge said. He said that child labour keeps the nation undeveloped and said no child should be deprived of getting an education. Working closely with stakeholders to minimise public inconvenience, says KMRL

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Wednesday said it was working closely with various stakeholders to minimise public inconvenience caused by the construction of the Phase II corridor connecting Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium and Infopark via Kakkanad. KMRL said in a statement that construction activities inevitably caused temporary inconvenience to road users at certain locations. “KMRL is working closely with traffic authorities, local bodies, and other stakeholder agencies to minimise public inconvenience and address issues related to traffic management, road conditions, drainage, and public safety on a continuous basis,” it said. The response comes amid widespread criticism of metro works causing severe traffic congestion along the 10.58-km stretch, mainly at Palarivattom and Kakkanad. KMRL said though it had submitted a proposal seeking approximately ₹7 crore for strengthening and improving side roads that were being extensively used for traffic diversion and construction-related movement, no dedicated funding was sanctioned for the purpose. “Nevertheless, KMRL has been undertaking maintenance and restoration measures in coordination with the agencies concerned to the extent possible, with special focus on ensuring safe …

HAL Airport reopening: Stakeholders meet, deliberate on modalities

HAL Airport reopening: Stakeholders meet, deliberate on modalities

Is it finally time to see some action on reopening the HAL Airport, an air traffic hub right in the heart of the city, before the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) took all civilian flights away in 2008? After years of widespread public demand, the big stakeholders could be nearing a decision. However, despite the overwhelming evidence of public convenience, challenges remain. All the key stakeholders met in Delhi on April 15 and discussed the issue threadbare. A flashy new second airport for the city could take at least a decade to be operationalised. But if the stakeholders decide, the existing HAL airport could be up and ready for flights in weeks. The big question: Will the State and Centre, Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and HAL reach a consensus to act? Who will run the airport? The Delhi meeting last month had the stakeholders deliberate on the question of the modalities related to who will run the HAL airport if it is …

Draft guidelines on regulating social media content, take suggestions from all stakeholders: SC to Centre

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said that the usage of filthy language must not be deemed as talent and a “very limited regulatory measure” must be imposed. The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre to formulate guidelines on regulating social media content amid the ongoing controversy over the “India’s Got Latent” show which involved the use of explicit sexual references by YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia and comedian Samay Raina. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said that the usage of filthy language must not be deemed as talent and a “very limited regulatory measure” must be imposed. “We don’t want any regulatory regime which leads to censorship…but it can’t be a free for all. See the quality of humour he has…humour is something the entire family can enjoy, nobody feels embarrassed. Using all filthy language is not talent,” Justice Kant said. “Think about what can be a very limited regulatory measure which must not lead to censorship…which must have some element of control…Something needs to be …

Photo used for representation purpose only | Photo Credit: The Hindu         The scandal involving Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF) in Andhra Pradesh, as part of which bribes were offered to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for favourable ranking has prompted significant changes in the grading agency. The NAAC plans to phase out the practice of physical data verification by expert panels, based on the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Committee’s report submitted last year. In Andhra Pradesh, where the bribery scam surfaced, stakeholders admit to a ‘pervasive culture of offering gifts’ to the inspecting teams of the accrediting body. NAAC team members and the institutions of higher education bypass rules, with the ‘above-normal hospitality’ being offered that includes organising special events, arranging sightseeing and most importantly, offering gifts to the inspection teams for favourable ranking. “It has become a necessary evil and everybody is forced to entertain this for fear of losing out in the rank race,” admits a former office-bearer of Andhra …
