4 min readKochiMay 18, 2026 04:29 PM IST Stand-up comedy is renowned across the globe not just for the entertainment it provides audiences, but also for stirring the mind and stimulating thought. Aside from making people laugh and offering them enjoyment, certain stand-up comedians — particularly satirists — ask challenging questions to the authorities that many may be hesitant to raise and spotlight the issues the public faces, amplifying voices that may easily go unheard. Over the years, several Indian stand-up comedians have found themselves embroiled in controversies due to this, and one major figure among them is Vir Das. His “Two Indias” monologue during a performance at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington in November 2021 had courted massive controversy and even led to several police complaints being filed against him for allegedly insulting India on foreign soil. However, not many attempted to provide “fitting replies” to the monologue’s content, which delved into the country’s purported duality on issues such as the response to COVID-19, air pollution, farmers’ agitations, …

But in one show, you insulted our leader.” Before Sarat could respond, two more individuals joined the first man on stage. Within a short while, a group of five to six others had gathered near the stage as well, turning what began as a confrontation into something far more hostile. The objections stemmed from a video titled “Andhra Politics” Sarat Uday uploaded to YouTube in December 2024. It covered politicians from across the …

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Nate Bargatze considered squeezing a big, dumb joke into his command for drivers to start their engines at the Daytona 500. How many feet are in 500 miles? Nobody knows, at least Nate Bargatze doesn’t at the Daytona 500 “At first, I thought about doing like, how many feet are in 500 miles,” Bargatze said. “Nobody knows.” Bargatze laughed when he said the proposed joke, which is a riff on his popular “Washington’s Dream” sketches on “Saturday Night Live,” fell flat when he tested it Saturday night during a gig in Indianapolis. “I was going to do another one with Jimmie Johnson being older to let the younger drivers know that his left blinker will be on the whole race,” Bargatze said. “Then when I got here and talked about it, it’s like, I think you just need to do, normal? Sumukhi Suresh chats about her ongoing Hoemonal tour, filmmakers she’d like to write for, and how she got over Pushpavalli.
