How Elon Musk used SpaceX to benefit himself and his businesses | Technology News

In January 2018, Elon Musk needed $100 million. Instead of calling a bank, he turned to SpaceX, the rocket company he founded and where he serves as CEO. Over the next three years, Musk borrowed a total of $500 million from his company. The loan terms were significantly lower than what most banks offered, with an interest rate that fluctuated from less than 1% to nearly 3%, according to internal SpaceX documents obtained by The New York Times. The documents did not say how Musk planned to use the money, which he paid back to SpaceX by the end of 2021. The loans and their exceptionally kind terms, which are not permitted at public companies, were possible only because SpaceX is privately held. They were just one way Musk has used SpaceX as a kind of piggy bank over the last two decades, according to an examination by the Times based on corporate filings, lawsuits, internal documents and interviews with people close to the firm. Musk not only secured loans from SpaceX to himself, but …

Starlink rival ‘Project Kuiper’ rebrands to Amazon Leo

Starlink rival ‘Project Kuiper’ rebrands to Amazon Leo

After several successful launches this year, Project Kuiper has its official name: Amazon Leo. It’s a nod to the term Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), which refers to orbits at an altitude of 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) or less. That’s the region where Amazon’s constellation of 153 satellites orbit. The original code name referred to the Kuiper Belt, an asteroid belt in the outer solar system past Neptune. Amazon plans to launch over 80 missions containing some 3,000 spacecraft. Leo has had six launches so far, including three launches using SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets with a total of 72 satellites on board. Amazon’s main rival in this space is SpaceX’s Starlink, which recently launched its 10,000th satellite. Amazon is promising Leo will help “extend fast, reliable internet to those beyond the reach of existing networks,” much like Starlink has attempted to over the past several years. Starlink (and Amazon) may be able to achieve that under the right circumstances, and addressing a lack of good internet in many areas is an admirable goal. However, launching tens of …

Elon Musk’s Starlink to Launch in India With Plans Priced Under Rs. 850 Per Month: Report

Starlink is said to be gearing up to introduce its satellite communication services in India after clearing most of the regulatory hurdles. With the launch allegedly getting closer, a report suggests that its plans could be priced as low as $10 (roughly Rs. 850) per month. Under the promotional schemes which are expected to be initially available, consumers could reportedly be offered unlimited data plans. With this, the Elon Musk-backed company aims to rapidly grow its user base to 10 million in order to offset high spectrum costs owing to volume benefits. Starlink Plans in India Earlier this month, Starlink received a nod from the government in the form of a Letter of Intent from the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), granting it permission to kickstart satellite communication services in india. According to an Economic Times report, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is said to have recommended an additional Rs. 500 per month as a per urban user charge, potentially making satellite-based internet services more expensive than wired and wireless broadband connections. This is …

SpaceX Successfully Launches 23 Starlink Satellites on Brand-New Falcon 9 Rocket

SpaceX marked its 60th Falcon 9 flight of 2025 by successfully launching a brand-new Falcon 9 booster rocket on the 20th of May. This rocket carries 23 Starlink V2 Mini satellites into low Earth orbit. Among those, 13 feature Direct to Cell capabilities. Originally, it was targeting 11:58 p.m. EDT on May 19 (0358 UTC on May 20) for the launch, but that try was aborted just before liftoff, for reasons that the company did not immediately explain. It was finally launched on Tuesday (May 20) at 11:19 p.m. EDT (0319 GMT on May 21) from the Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. About the launch According to SpaceX’s mission overview, this was the first-ever launch for this particular Falcon 9’s (booster B1095) first stage. While most recent SpaceX missions have reused Falcon 9 boosters , a signature part of the company’s cost-saving and sustainability strategy ,Tuesday’s flight featured a rare first-stage debut. The rocket successfully completed its initial mission, separating from the upper stage around two and a …
