Lionel Messi’s largest statue unvieled in a tiny town in Argentina

2 min readUpdated: Jun 27, 2026 08:13 PM IST A statue of Lionel Messi, 85 feet tall, has been unveiled with the World Cup in front of him as he kneels and raises a finger toward the sky. It is the tallest statue built for Messi, surpassing the one in Kolkata, which was 70 feet. Aldo Beroisa, the statue’s 61-year-old local sculptor, told the Associated Press: “He is Argentina’s natural ambassador. For me, it was very important, not only as an artist but as an Argentine.” The sculptors made use of 70 tons of steel to make the statue of the iconic player. “That is not the first time a Messi statue has failed to stand the test of time. A bronze figure unveiled in Buenos Aires in 2016 was damaged by vandals a year later, with its head, arms and body stolen,” quoted the Telegraph. And the one in Kolkata was also taken down in May due to safety concerns. This move comes after residents complained that the massive structure appeared to sway during …

Teams don’t put jerseys or flags on Stallone’s Rocky Statue, it’s about a curse | Football News

The grey stone steps, 72 to be exact, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art leads to the iconic “Rocky Statue”. The fictional Rocky Balboa character that Sylvester Stallone played in the eponymous movie is cast in bronze in his characteristic two-fist victory pose. Tourists recreate the famous scene where Rocky, in his comeback quest, breeze up the stairs, bloodshot eyes and the eternal sports anthem, Survivors’ Eye of the Tiger ringing in the background. But sports fans are careful about visiting the site; they are careful not to put their jersey or flag on him. The Rocky Curse has struck fear in them. The belief goes that if fans drape their team’s jersey or wrap him in the flag, they would invariably lose. Brazilian fans in the stadium and in the food court near the Centre Market were heard asking each other grimly, putting their festivities aside: “Did you put the jersey or flag on Rocky?” A negative nod, accompanied by a shudder, brings instant relief and a tight embrace. Created as a prop by …

Lionel Messi statue to be relocated amid safety concerns; dismantling work begins in Kolkata’s Lake Town | Kolkata News

2 min readJun 1, 2026 12:46 PM IST Preparations began on Monday to dismantle and relocate the towering statue of football legend Lionel Messi in Kolkata’s Lake Town after authorities declared the structure a potential public safety hazard. Engineers and workers were seen carrying out preliminary operations at the site along the busy VIP Road corridor, where the 70-foot statue was installed just five months ago. This move comes after complaints from local residents that the massive structure appeared to sway during strong winds, raising concerns about its stability. According to officials, the relocation process will be carried out in multiple stages to ensure safety. Heavy-duty cables will first be attached to secure the statue, following which a 40-tonne crane will hold the structure firmly in place. Workers will then carefully cut the iron framework near the statue’s leg supports, enabling the entire structure to be lifted and removed in one piece. The decision to shift the statue was taken by the Public Works Department (PWD) after reports of visible movement during recent spells of …

Buddha statue, dancing Ganesha: Inside the $14 million-worth 657 antiquities that the US returned to India

India has received 657 antiquities from the United States, collectively valued at nearly $14 million. These artefacts were stolen and trafficked through international networks before being sold in the US. Two key figures linked to the racket are disgraced art dealer Subhash Kapoor and convicted trafficker Nancy Wiener. The returned antiquities include a bronze Avalokiteshvara statue and a sandstone Ganesha sculpture.
