Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka directed officials to expedite the process of drafting the Rohith Vemula Telangana (Prevention of Identity-Based Discrimination in Higher Education) Bill, 2026, and prepare a comprehensive preliminary report outlining the proposed legislation’s procedures and provisions. Chairing the first meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted to formulate the Bill at the State Secretariat, Mr. Vikramarka said the government was committed to eliminating identity-based discrimination in higher educational institutions and ensuring a peaceful and inclusive environment for students. Recalling the death of Rohith Vemula at the University of Hyderabad, he said the incident had shaken not only Telangana, but the entire country. He said the proposed legislation was aimed at fulfilling the government’s commitment to creating a discrimination-free education system in universities. Mr. Vikramarka said that every individual lives with self-respect and that no one suffers because of discrimination. He added that industrial unit owners wishing to convert their lands must apply through the TS-iPASS portal within six months. Initiating a short discussion on the HILT policy in the Assembly on Tuesday, he refuted allegations of vested interests behind it. “Our government is maintaining complete transparency in implementing the HILT policy,” he said, adding that the lands proposed for conversion under the policy belong to industrial unit owners who have complete rights over them. Cabinet sub-committee to hold another meeting on closure of nine new universities

A Cabinet sub-committee has decided to hold another meeting after it was unable to take a unanimous decision on the closure of nine of the 10 new universities started during the BJP government tenure. The sub-committee, headed by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, held its second meeting on Friday to review the financial condition of the universities. In the first meeting, it was decided to close nine universities, including the Maharani Cluster University and Nrupatunga University in Bengaluru apart from Bidar University. However, sources in the committee confirmed that the final decision could not be taken owing to some technical reasons. The Karnataka State Higher Education Council, which was formed to review the fund amount required for the first five years of running the new universities, had reported that ₹342 crore is required to cover the salaries of the teaching and the non-teaching staff, infrastructure, purchase of equipment, vehicles, furniture, and other items. “A final decision has not been taken on the closure of some universities that were established. Bharathidasan University Syndicate subcommittee to discharge duties of Vice-Chancellor

A three-member Syndicate subcommittee has been constituted to perform the duties of the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University (BDU) as V-C M. Selvam completed his tenure earlier this week. Mr. Selvam was appointed as Vice-Chancellor on February 5, 2021, and continued in office for three years. On February 4, 2024, his service period was extended by one year, through an order by Governor R.N. Ravi, who is the Chancellor. Mr. Selvam demitted office on February 5. The Syndicate subcommittee will perform the duties of the Vice-Chancellor until an appointment is made to the post. The Commissioner of Collegiate Education E. Sundaravalli will be the convener of the subcommittee. Syndicate members R. Sakthi Krishnan and V. Cabinet sub-committee gives approval to declare four forest areas as eco-sensitive zones

The Cabinet sub-committee in a meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre gave its approval for the declaration of eco-sensitive zones for four forest areas. They are Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in Chikkamagaluru district, Bankapura Wolf Sanctuary in Koppal, Uttaragudda Wildlife Sanctuary in Chitradurga, and Arsikere Bear Sanctuary in Hassan district. No hindrance to public Mr. Khandre said that declaring eco-sensitive zones around wildlife sanctuaries would not cause any hindrance to the public or locals. He added that in four of the State’s wildlife sanctuaries, the eco-sensitive zone would range from a minimum of 1 km to a maximum of 10 km. However, in areas with human settlements or private land, the zone would be limited to just 1 km, ensuring that locals and farmers face no inconvenience. As per the Ministry of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change guidelines, activities in eco-sensitive zones are categorised into promoted, regulated, and prohibited. The cabinet sub-committee on industries, chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Thursday approved four major projects totalling an investment of ₹1.17 lakh crore. These projects, spread across Marathwada, Vidarbha, Pune and Panvel, focus on semiconductor and electric vehicle manufacturing and are expected to generate 29,000 jobs. Previously, in July, the sub-committee had greenlit projects worth ₹80,000 crore. The Tower Semiconductor Company’s project, located in Panvel, Raigad district, involves a two-phase investment totalling ₹84,947 crore, with ₹58,763 crore allocated for the first phase and ₹25,184 crore for the second. This initiative is set to create 15,000 jobs. In a meeting held on July 30, the cabinet sub-committee also approved RRP Electronics’ semiconductor manufacturing project for OSAT and chips. Together with the Tower Semiconductor project, these ventures will position Maharashtra as a leader in advanced semiconductor production. The Karnataka government on Thursday decided to constitute a cabinet sub-committee for proper coordination with experts to take necessary decisions aimed at containing the spread of Covid-19, including precautions to be taken, and treatment provided. Karnataka has recorded three Covid-19 deaths in the past one week.
