Apple Sued After Alleged Fake Crypto Wallet App Cost Users $1.8 Million

An App Store approval does not necessarily mean a cryptocurrency wallet is safe. Three crypto investors have sued Apple after allegedly losing approximately $1.8 million in Bitcoin through an iPhone app impersonating Sparrow Wallet, a legitimate desktop-only wallet. The federal complaint, filed July 24 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges Apple failed to properly vet and monitor software hosted on its storefront. Plaintiffs James Ramirez, Christopher Ellis, and Jalen Delgado say they downloaded a fake app mimicking Sparrow Wallet—a legitimate, open-source Bitcoin tool that actually only operates on desktop systems. According to filings reported by MacRumors, Delgado lost about $120,000 in May 2025 after entering his secret seed phrase into the counterfeit app. Ramirez lost roughly $875,000 in July 2025 and reported the fraud to Apple that same day. However, the app remained listed, leading Ellis to install it on August 3 and lose approximately $840,000. The lawsuit alleges the victims trusted the app because Apple aggressively markets its platform as a “safe and trusted place to discover and …
