Water, salt and sugar packs must contain warning on presence of micro or nano plastics: Madras High Court

In a significant order, the Madras High Court has directed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as well as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to forewarn customers about the possible presence of micro and nano plastics (MNPs) in packaged drinking water, salt and sugar sold through Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles and in plastic packs. A special Division Bench of Justices N. Sathish Kumar and D. Bharatha Chakravarthy, constituted to hear forest and environment related issues, ordered that the labels on the PET bottles as well as the sugar and salt packets must contain the warning ‘This water may contain micro/nano plastics’ or ‘This salt/sugar may contain micro/nano plastics’ in red colour font of size 10. The Ministry, as well as FSSAI, were directed to issue an appropriate notification, in compliance of the court order, within four weeks and issue instructions to all companies that sell drinking water, salt and sugar in PET bottles and other plastic packaging to comply with the new labelling requirements scrupulously. Sachin Yamananni, a worker in the Hiranyakeshi sugar factory at Hukkeri in Belagavi district of Karnataka, died in a workplace accident on January 12. He was caught in the belt of a crusher when he was feeding lime pellets to the crushing machine. He had joined as a temporary worker 10 days ago.  A case has been registered. The blast occurred in the factory’s Number 1 boiler compartment while routine repair work was underway. According to preliminary information, workers were repairing a valve when the boiler suddenly exploded, releasing scalding hot molasses that engulfed those present nearby. All eight injured workers sustained serious burns and were rushed to hospital for treatment. While authorities are yet to issue an official confirmation, there are strong concerns that two of the injured may have succumbed to their injuries, with the death toll feared to rise. World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14, with new data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) revealing the scale of diabetes risk and detection gaps in the city. According to a BMC survey conducted as part of the Salt-Sugar Campaign 2025 with a sample size of 695 people, only 27 per cent of respondents were aware of the health dangers linked to excessive sugar consumption. Another survey conducted with 5,000 respondents saw 15.6 per cent found to be pre-diabetic. Municipal health institutions screened 5,59,751 people for diabetes and hypertension over the last three years. Medical experts estimate that around half of those living with diabetes remain undiagnosed until they develop complications. There are currently 26 municipal hospitals operating Non-Communicable Disease Corners for systematic blood pressure and diabetes checks for individuals above 30 years of age.
