‘I am not dancing for…’

3 min readNew DelhiApr 3, 2026 11:00 PM IST Suhasini Maniratnam, 64, recently shared her fitness routine. “I do Zumba. I do Salsa. I have just started Bharatanatyam at the age of 63. My teacher is saying…you are ready for Arangetram? I am saying, No, I am not dancing for the audience. I am dancing for myself,” she told author Sudha Menon on the SecondSunrise podcast. The Tamil actor’s statement reinforces an important message: movement is essential at any age. Starting later in life may require more caution, but it’s never too late to build strength, flexibility, and endurance. “Activities like dance not only support physical health but also enhance mental well-being, coordination, and confidence. The goal should not be intensity but consistency and safety. With the right approach, even demanding art forms can be adapted and enjoyed well into later years,” said Dr Sarang Deshpande, consultant, orthopedics and joint replacement, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, while adding that age by itself is not a limitation. Director Mani Ratnam’s wife, Suhasini Maniratnam, has always been vocal about her opinion on cinema, and more so on the state of the Hindi film industry. A few years ago, when Suhasini was asked about the state of Bollywood, she did not shy away from calling out filmmaker for plagiarism. In a chat with The Times of India in 2010, when Suhasini was sked about her opinion on Bollywood, she said that she reviewed Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra-starrer Anjaana Anjaani, and noted its similarity to the films Before Sunrise and The Girl on the Bridge. “I realised that in Bollywood they sometimes blatantly copy without as much as buying the rights or even acknowledging the original work,” she said. But she quickly added that she was still hopeful as she was impressed by Dibakar Baneerjee’s films Khosla Ka Ghsola and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye as she called them “cleverly written.” ALSO READ | ‘Today, Shah Rukh Khan probably wouldn’t greet me like he used to’: Abhijeet Sawant reflects on declining fame, recalls hobnobbing with …

Mani Ratnam’s wife Suhasini says women in cinema are being ‘exploited’ in the name of freedom of expression

Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s wife Suhasini recently made a shocking revelation on how women in the film industry are being “exploited.” In an interview with Mathrubhumi, the actress said that many artists are adopting the misguided notion that exposing skin equates to liberation. She further criticized the influence of “western” ideals on Indian cinema. During the interview, Suhasini Maniratnam shared her perspective on the representation of women in contemporary cinema. She pointed out that there is a significant emphasis on skin exposure and intimate scenes as a result of Western trends.  Mani Ratnam’s wife said, “There is a lot of freedom in skin exposure and close scenes because we’re copying the West and we don’t mind doing sensuous scenes. From the directors to the artists, they are a little more liberalized (now). We are again back to the exploitation of women. Women are doing this willingly, whether it is body exposure or close (intimate) scenes.” Suhasini mentioned that previously, to keep up in the competitive film industry, artists felt pressured to perform scenes they didn’t …

Suhasini Shares Husband Mani Ratnam’s Reaction to ‘Jai Mahendran’: ‘We Have Minimal Exchange…’ | Exclusive

Jai Mahendran is currently streaming on SonyLIV. Mani Ratnam’s wife Suhasini Maniratnam says they’re one of those couples who, despite working in the same industry, don’t engage in too many conversations about each other’s filmographies. Suhasini Maniratnam was recently seen in SonyLIV’s Jai Mahendran, a political satire web series that questions bureaucracy, where she played a tahsildar. It marks the actor and filmmaker’s OTT debut in Malayalam. Naturally, she’s thrilled with the reviews she has been receiving for her maiden show in the said language. Speaking to News18 Showsha exclusively from Chennai, she says, “It has been very good. I didn’t expect it because the series doesn’t have big names or a known director. Here, we had a bunch of relatively new people except Saiju Kurup and myself. But all of them performed really well.” She refers to Jai Mahendran as ‘a welcome change’ for the audiences and states, “It’s a serious subject told in a humorous manner, and that’s what people liked.” Having worked across the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam film industries, Suhasini …
