Sumukhi Suresh on The Royals 2, risks of comedy today: I am already offending men by being a female comic on stage

Sumukhi Suresh recently added an achievement to her repertoire last month as she was the sole Indian female comic in the global music festival, Netflix Is A Joke, lineup in Los Angeles. Talking to us, the actor-comedian talks about representing Indian comedy scene on world stage, saying, “People don’t get it, but it is such a big validation for a comedian. It’s very good for me as an artiste to move ahead. Platforms like these challenge your voice to see if you can entertain an audience which is not from your own diaspora. But making people from the Indian diaspora is the best. Ghar ki murgi dal barabar wala scene nahin hona chahiye.” Sumukhi Suresh (Photo: Instagram) While comedy in today’s time has become quite risky, Sumukhi Suresh stays away from making political jokes. Ask her if it’s deliberate and she says, “It may be subconsciously deliberate that the content I make turns out to be anecdotal, but comedy from a female comic is already politicised people. There is politics to it, and the fact …

Sumukhi Suresh says female comics get cancelled every day: ‘Just read our comments section’ | Web-series News

Sumukhi Suresh became the only Indian comic to represent India at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival, which took place in Los Angeles, California last month. In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, we ask her candidly if Netflix is really a joke, she quips, “No, I was really a big joke on Netflix.” When we ask her to crack a joke on the streaming platform, she shot back, “You know my style, the joke is always on me.” Besides stand-up comedy, Sumukhi continues to dabble in “a thousand things so that I become one interesting person.” Did you fear alienating the foreign audience while doing a very culturally specific set in LA? I don’t think of alienation because the moment you get into that, you have to pander to too many things. And my stand-up is quite anecdotal. If I try and cater to everyone, my story would get diluted. Emotion-vise, it’s universal. That’s the hope. I don’t explain it too much in any language because then the joke gets lost. I just try to …

She says, “It is risky for sure, but it’s the law of the land now if you are going to take the risk of saying something that’s not usual. When I went to Bangalore, a 60-year-old man put a complaint against me for being vulgar in a public place, which was hilarious. He was like ye aise kaise baat kar sakti hai stage pe.” Sumukhi Suresh on the dangers of doing comedy(Photo: Instagram) However, she is not perturbed by it. “There is a range of complaints doing rounds, agar sabko respond karein to kaise chalega. Sumukhi Suresh interview: ‘Working with Vikramaditya Motwane was classic Sumukhi way of just hustling’ | Web Series

Sumukhi Suresh can’t keep calm. Not that she wants to. The stand-up comedian is currently touring across the country with her show Hoemonal, which she kicked off in Europe. Just a couple of months ago, she wrote dialogues for Vikramaditya Motwane’s Netflix screen-life thriller CTRL. And soon, she’ll be seen acting in Netflix show The Royals. Juggling three hats demands a lot of agility, but not when you’re Sumukhi, who can dump all three hats in a big hat and wear it like a boss. Sumukhi Suresh chats about her ongoing Hoemonal tour, filmmakers she’d like to write for, and how she got over Pushpavalli. (Also Read – Vikramaditya Motwane breaks down CTRL’s alternate ending: ‘There was a version where Nella goes out for revenge’) No juggling, only hustling “Honestly, I like to do all three, and if I get a chance, maybe more. I’m that artist who has to do everything to be a good artist. I find it easier to have a range in what I do,” says Sumukhi in an exclusive interview. …
