Charli XCX ‘honoured’ to be at ‘political’ Berlin Film Festival Aidan Zamiri’s mockumentary “The Moment”, starring Charli XCX playing a fictionalised version of herself dealing with the fallout of her own “brat summer” phenomenon, is being shown in the festival’s Panorama section after premiering at Sundance last month. At a press conference, Charli XCX was asked why she felt it was important to launch the film this way, at a time when many prominent new film releases are not coming from the festival circuit. “I think we all collectively feel so honoured to have been invited to show our film at both Sundance and here at the Berlinale,” she said, adding that “both festivals really do champion a wide variety of filmmakers with really important voices”. She went on to emphasise that the Berlinale “in particular is known for not shying away from political films, from films that …

Hossein Keshavarz and Maryam Ataei’s film, ‘The Friend’s House is Here’, premiered at the recently concluded Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category. The Iranian-American husband-wife filmmakers shot the film in Iran amid the extraordinary turbulence of 2025: the 12-day war following Israel’s strikes, nationwide demonstrations, and violent crackdowns. Their film, inspired by real accounts, portrays two young women artists expressing themselves and protecting each other in Tehran’s underground creative circle. On the sidelines of its premiere in Park City, Utah, the duo spoke to HT about smuggling their work into the festival, and depicting a new generation that is reshaping Iranian society and politics. Edited excerpts: ‘The Friend’s House is Here’ filmmakers Hossein Keshavarz and Maryam Ataei. How difficult was it getting the film to Sundance? Hossein: Everything happened so quickly. Shame and Money movie review: Visar Morina’s realist drama on economic disparity hits hard | Sundance Film Festival

Shame and Money movie review Cast: Astrit Kabashi, Flonja Kodheli, Kumrije Hoxha, Fiona Gllavica, Alban Ukaj Director: Visar Morina Star rating: ★★★★ Kosovan filmmaker Visar Morina’s Shame and Money plays out like a searing indictment of the economic disparity that has become so palpably real in the world today. This is a story about the crushing indignities, daily struggles and the systemic dismantling of a working-class family forced to confront their realities every single day. How much more can they possibly endure until they break? Wrenching and told with confidence, Shame and Money plays out like a moral anticapitalist thriller. (Also read: A mother fights the system to protect and preserve a mountain in unforgettable doc | Sundance Film Festival review) Shame and Money won the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Dramatic Competition. The premise Morina’s third feature, after Babai and Exil, begins like a slow-burner. At the dinner table, the lines are drawn. Shaban (Astrit Kabashi) and Hatixhe (Flonja Kodheli) are the ones reeling with the consequences after a heated exchange with the …

A mother fights the system to protect and preserve a mountain in unforgettable doc | Sundance Film Festival review

To Hold a Mountain review Directors: Biljana Tutorov and Petar Glomazić Star rating: ★★★★ The Sundance Film Festival always surprises with its glorious documentary programming, and this year was no different. I mostly look forward to the non-fiction features to illuminate, shock, and humble me in some manner, and this year, one of those entries was ‘To Hold a Mountain’. (Also read: A female taxi driver forges her way ahead in the Nigerian capital in Lady | Sundance Film Festival review) To Hold a Mountain won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The premise This is a story about a family fighting to protect a mountain in the remote highlands of Montenegro from forces much larger than themselves. It has been said that NATO plans to build a military training ground on the plateau. Helicopters zoom out even when the camera films the middle-aged Gara and her adolescent daughter, Nada. That cannot happen, and Gara is the voice of resistance for the small community nestled in the highlands. In an early scene, …

In Barbara Forever, a pioneer of queer cinema gets a moving and incandescent tribute | Sundance Film Festival review

Barbara documentary review Director: Brydie O’Connor Star rating: ★★★.5 If you are not aware of who Barbara Hammer was, you must correct that right away. This intimate new documentary, which celebrates her life and legacy, is also a great place to start. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, it is the kind of documentary I look forward to most, perhaps because I have some prior connection and knowledge of the subject. There is always that deep-seated fear whether it will do her justice. Her films, her artistry, the way she confronted the camera and used the visual medium: all of it so uniquely her alone. Barbara Forever had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival where it won the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award. The premise Thankfully, it did not last long. The first few minutes of Barbara Forever drove that emotion away. Brydie O’Connor’s film is driven by an invigorating, live-wire energy that shoots for the stars. It is alive with the spirit of the revolutionary filmmaker who was once a woman, a component …

Swinging to win: ‘The Invite’ delivers comedy gold at Sundance Olivia Wilde’s blisteringly funny “The Invite” explores what happens when a husband and wife who have long since tired of each other find themselves sitting down with a couple very much in the throes of passion. The film plunges Joe and Angela and Pina and Hawk into a pressure cooker of awkward small talk, simmering anger, and sexual tension with comedic and relatable results. “Anyone who’s ever been in a relationship of any kind, I think will recognize some of these themes,” Wilde told AFP at the Sundance Film Festival, where the movie had its premiere Saturday. “We made this as a playful piece to allow people to laugh and get in touch with their feelings, maybe a little bit.” Joe, whose band had a minor hit two …

PARK CITY, Utah — The comedy streak at the Sundance Film Festival continued Saturday with the world premieres of the art world satire “The Gallerist,” with Natalie Portman, and Oliva Wilde’s “The Invite,” a sharp look a crumbling marriage. Natalie Portman, Seth Rogen debut new movies at Sundance Film Festival “The Invite,” which debuted at the Eccles Theater, marks Wilde’s third time behind the camera and first since “Don’t Worry Darling.” It received an enthusiastic standing ovation.
