Move follows state decision to sell electricity in open market instead of supplying subsidised power to HPSEBL | India News

4 min readShimlaMay 22, 2026 10:17 PM IST In a major policy shift, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) has decided to stop supplying electricity to neighbouring states under the long-running “power banking” system after the state government decided not to provide 1,800 million units of power to the Board. The move comes after the state government chose to sell its share of electricity in the open market to generate higher revenue instead of supplying it to the Board at subsidised rates. The neighbouring states primarily affected include Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. A senior HPSEBL official privy to the development said, “The State Electricity Regulatory Commission has principally approved this. There are two primary reasons behind this move. First: Two mega electricity generation projects, including the Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Power Station and SJVN Limited, are now under the state government. Earlier, we directly procured electricity from these two projects. 14 people have been arrested in a ganja-related case in Andhra Pradesh`s Guntur district, police said. The arrest occurred within the limits of the Pedakakani Police Station under the North Sub-Division of Guntur district. Superintendent of Police (SP) Guntur Vakul Jindal on Sunday said the arrested accused were involved in supplying ganja by road from the Araku region. He added that 4 kilograms and 800 grams of ganja were seized from their possession. The Superintendent of Police further stated that over the past three months, strict action has been taken against ganja as part of the “Sankalpam” programme, with police cracking down firmly on drug trafficking in the district. A distillery unit in Goa that was allegedly manufacturing liquor in an illegal manner was sealed on Wednesday, after the arrest of five people, including one found with IMFL bottles worth over Rs 43 lakh in Gujarat’s Navsari, led police to the premises. “This is for the first time that a distillery in Goa had been sealed in a joint operation between Navsari and Goa excise department,” said Navsari district Superintendent of Police Sushil Agarwal. Substandard drugs: Karnataka extra cautious; samples being tested at State-level before supplying to district warehouses

To deal with the issue of substandard drugs, the State Health Department is now getting samples of drugs tested after procurement from successful bidders at the State-level before they are supplied to district warehouses, said Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Responding to BJP member Talwar Sabanna, Mr. Rao said 10 additional NABL laboratories have been empanelled for drug testing in the State. He said a proposal has been sent to the Finance Department to include a tender condition for officials to personally visit the drug manufacturing companies annually or once in every two years to check the quality of the products. “The Karnataka State Medical Supplies Corporation Ltd. (KSMSCL) is being strengthened to ensure the distribution of quality medicines to public health institutions. Kota: A delivery agent of a quick commerce platform has been arrested for allegedly delivering cigarettes to underaged coaching students in Kota’s Landmark City area, police said on Sunday. Satyaprakash Koli (48) was nabbed while he was supplying cigarettes to coaching students on Saturday evening, SP Kota city Amrita Duhan said. The arrest was made during a crackdown against sale and supply of cigarettes by quick commerce platforms to underaged coaching students, the police said. The accused, who works for Blinkit, has been booked under section 77 of Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act and under section 9/11 of Rajasthan Prohibition of Smoking and Non-smoker’s Health Protection Act, the SP said. The city police had already written to representatives of Blinkit company at its office in Landmark City asking not to sell and supply cigarettes to minor students, but despite the instruction, the company was found to be selling them to the coaching students, she said.
