Tension erupted in Gevrai town of Beed district on Tuesday morning during Maharashtra local body elections, when supporters of BJP and NCP leaders clashed, police said, reported the PTI. The altercation, which took place outside a BJP leader’s residence, escalated to stone-pelting, causing damage to several vehicles. Police resorted to lathi-charge at some locations to disperse the crowd. Superintendent of Police Navneet Kanwat said the situation has since returned to normal. The clash involved supporters of local NCP MLA Vijaysinh Pandit and BJP leader and former MLA Laxman Pawar at a booth in ward number 10. Although BJP and Ajit Pawar-led NCP are allies at the state level, they are contesting against each other in Gevrai, according to the PTI. Former MP and Congress leader V.S. Ugrappa on Saturday alleged that the ‘Janivara’ row has been triggered by the supporters of BJP to further widen the divide in the society.
