Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Tuesday administered the oath of office to five new judges of the Supreme Court. Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva and Arun Palli, along with senior advocate V. Mohana, took oath as judges of the apex court after the Centre cleared their appointments on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium.  Acting on the Collegium’s recommendations made in its meetings held on May 22 and May 27, the Centre on Monday approved the elevation of the four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate Mohana to the Supreme Court. Acting on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, the Centre on Monday, June 1, cleared the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate V. Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court. Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, while posting on social media platform X, announced that the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI), had appointed Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva and Arun Palli, along with senior advocate V. Hence, to take steps in advance for filling up the expected vacancy, the Supreme Court collegium has recommended Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari, now serving in the Kerala High Court, as the next Chief Justice of Madras High Court. Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, Justice Dharmadhikari was born on July 8, 1966 at Raipur and obtained his bachelor’s degree in commerce and law from the Nagpur University. He began his practice as an advocate at the High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur in 1992 and was a standing counsel for the Centre for about 15 years beginning from 2000 to 2015. Former Chief Justice of India BR Gavai recently opened up about his experiences after the shoe-throwing attempt at him, made last month. He said that his decision not to pursue action against the lawyer stemmed from his upbringing and personal values. Responding to the criticism of the working of the Supreme Court collegium, Gavai strongly defended its functioning.(PTI File) In an interview with ANI, former CJI BR Gavai said, “Maybe it is a result of my upbringing… I didn’t even know it was related to some alleged utterances or observations made by me in court.” Gavai also added that he felt he should proceed with the matter and that it was a decision “taken in the spur of the moment,” he said. Supreme Court publishes details of recommendations made by Collegium for HCs | India News

Just a week before his retirement, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on Monday made public details of the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendations for appointments as High Court judges. These details — for all recommendations between November 9, 2022 and May 5 this year — include caste, gender, and whether the candidate is related to any sitting or retired High Court or Supreme Court judge. The data published on the Supreme Court website shows that of 406 candidates recommended by the SC Collegium to the government, 221 have been approved by the government, while the rest are either pending or have been rejected. Only eight candidates belonged to Scheduled Castes; seven belonged to Scheduled Tribes; 32 candidates were from Other Backward Classes; 7 were from Backward/Most Backward Classes and 14 were related to either sitting or retired judges. A month after he was called by the Supreme Court Collegium over his remarks targeting Muslims at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad event in Prayagraj, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court has written to the Chief Justice, saying he stands by his remarks which, he maintained, did not violate any principle of judicial conduct. Chief Justice Arun Bhansali of the High Court had sought Justice Yadav’s response following the latter’s meeting with the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on December 17.
