Image for representational purposes only. | Photo Credit: AP The Indian Army is raising dedicated ‘Baaz Battalions’ to significantly enhance its Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) capability, a move aimed at strengthening battlefield surveillance, intelligence gathering and rapid response through a specialised drone force, defence sources said. Sources in the Indian Army have confirmed the development and said that the new battalions will be built upon the Army’s existing RPA Flights and will comprise a specialist pool of trained personnel responsible for operating and managing Remotely Piloted Aircraft systems. The decision to establish the Baaz Battalions, sources said, has been driven by operational lessons from recent border standoffs along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, as well as the successful employment of drone capabilities during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May last year. The Baaz Battalions will centralise the Army’s expanding drone capabilities and will be designed to handle the entire lifecycle of RPA operations. ‘Operation Toofan’: DANSAF, police intensify surveillance on inter-State trucks

The District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) and the police have intensified checks on inter-State trucks and goods vehicles along major transit corridors to curb the movement of narcotic substances through commercial transport networks. This focussed action is part of the ongoing ‘Operation Toofan’, a State-wide anti-drug enforcement campaign. Special squads, including plainclothesmen and shadow patrol squads, have been deployed at strategic locations along national and State highways and at border transit points to conduct inspections. The operation is being carried out in coordination with the Excise and Forest departments and highway patrol squads. According to police sources, investigations have revealed that some drivers allegedly use return journeys after delivering goods to transport contraband for trafficking networks. The airport authorities here launched a surveillance system, including mandatory thermal screening, for international passengers, following the WHO`s declaration of the Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa, an official said on Saturday. Biju Patnaik International Airport Director Prasanna Pradhan said the arrangement for thermal screening has been made as per the health department instructions. The officials engaged in the screening exercise are also thoroughly checking the 21-day travel history of every passenger in order to ascertain potential risk factors, he said. “The arrangement has also been made on the airport premises for isolation and testing as per the Ebola screening guidelines issued by the Union Health Ministry,” Pradhan said. An international flight from Bangkok landed at the airport here, and strict surveillance was maintained on the passengers coming from that country. All the passengers are advised to report any symptoms like high fever, body ache, or unusual fatigue.
