Officials said census preparatory work has been suspended in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, which are yet to recover from the floods in July, among the worst the State has witnessed. Most of the 82 people who died in the floods this year were from these two districts. “The self-enumeration, which began today (Sunday), marks an important step towards making Census 2027 more participatory and citizen-centric,” Biswajit Pegu, Director of Census Operations, told journalists. He urged the people of Assam to use the online facility and participate in the Census process. He further said that the facility on se.census.gov.in would remain active until August 16, ahead of the commencement of the house-listing operation and housing census on August 17. A staffer attached to the mortuary at Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore was suspended on Friday for reportedly demanding ₹2,000 cash to send the body of deceased for postmortem. The suspended staff was identified as R. Kannan. Initial inquiry revealed that victim B. Velu, a tribal from Palambattu village atop Peechamanthai hillock, requested Kannan to send the body of his relative K. Saravanan, who died in the village a few days ago, for postmortem. Health officials said that Kannan reportedly demanded ₹2,000 cash for the purpose. The video of the incident went viral on social media and invited public outcry. Subsequently, an inquiry was conducted by hospital authorities. Based on the orders of Collector P.S. Leela Alex, Rohini Devi, dean of the hospital, issued a suspension order against the mortuary staff. A probe is under way. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized food items worth over Rs 1.85 crore, including prohibited gutkha and pan masala, during a statewide special inspection drive conducted between July 16 and 20. The drive resulted in the registration of 37 first information reports (FIRs), the arrest of 49 persons, and the suspension of licences of 16 food establishments, officials said on Tuesday. According to an official press release, the raids were carried out under the ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign, led by Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. During the five-day drive, officials conducted 53 raids across the state, seizing 1,731 litres of milk and 896 kg of dairy products worth Rs 1.44 lakh, besides prohibited food items valued at Rs 1.80 crore.
