The Kerala High Court on Wednesday invalidated the oath-taking of 20 BJP councillors of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation and a Congress ward member of a gram panchayat for invoking names of Hindu deities, martyrs and other individuals during the ceremony, ruling that statutory oaths must be taken “in the name of God” or by solemn affirmation. The ruling by the bench of justice PV Kunhikrishnan came in response to two petitions challenging the oaths taken by 20 BJP councillors of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation and one ward member of the Congress of a grama panchayat in the state. BJP MLAs Ranoj Pegu, Ashok Singhal, Biswajit Daimary and AGP’s Keshab Mahanta were among the 12 legislators who took oath as Ministers on Friday (June 5, 2026) as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expanded his Cabinet, taking the strength of the council of ministers to 17. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to the MLAs at a function at the Jyoti-Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir in Guwahati. Among the new faces in the Cabinet are BJP’s Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Nandini Devi and Sushanta Borgohain. AGP’s Mahanta, who was in Mr. Sarma’s previous cabinet, has been included in the council of Ministers. According to the traffic police, vehicle movement will be prohibited on several key roads between 12 noon and 8 p.m., including stretches of Cubbon Road, Dr B.R. Ambedkar Road, Race Course Road, Queens Road, and roads leading towards Lok Bhavan. Heavy congestion is anticipated in and around the CBD area due to the event, and public gatherings.
