Vaibhav Sooryavanshi humiliating great bowlers exposes cricket’s systemic ills: Greg Chappell

4 min readJun 8, 2026 09:02 PM IST While there is reason to celebrate the sheer brilliance of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, one must also look at how the teenager’s effortless evisceration of some of the most accomplished bowlers exposes a worrying direction that cricket is headed towards, according to former Australia captain Greg Chappell. Chappell, considered one of the greatest batters of all time and India’s head coach from 2005 to 2007, said that Sooryavanshi’s success shows that “the modern environment has been engineered to make bowling extinct”. Chappell admitted that he is mightily impressed with Sooryavanshi, comparing the teenager to some of the greats of the game. “In his elegant downswing and flawless balance, there are distinct echoes of the great Graeme Pollock and the incomparable Sir Garfield Sobers. When he slashes across the line or lofts over extra cover, one glimpses the ferocious, instinctive genius of Brian Lara, combined with the devastating, ball-one intent of Adam Gilchrist,” said Chappell in his column for ESPNCricinfo. “It is a classic, pure method being deployed with contemporary …

(Representational photo) The Supreme Court of India has issued a landmark directive aimed at revitalising the Right to Education (RTE) Act, declaring that the admission of underprivileged children into private educational institutions must be treated as a “national mission”. In a significant judgement, a bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Atul S Chandurkar ordered state and central government authorities to frame comprehensive rules to ensure the effective implementation of the 25 per cent reservation for children from economically weaker sections (EWS) and socially disadvantaged groups in private, unaided, non-minority schools. The apex court expressed concern over the “systemic gaps” that have historically hindered the successful integration of EWS students into elite private institutions. Resident doctors in Maharashtra face systemic neglect, says statewide survey

Resident doctors in Maharashtra face systemic neglect, says statewide survey

A statewide survey by the Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (Central MARD) in 2025, has uncovered alarming deficiencies in security, hostel facilities, stipend disbursement and infrastructure across 18 government medical colleges, affecting more than 5,800 postgraduate resident doctors. The findings, released on Friday (December 12, 2025), point to a systemic crisis that compromises doctors’ safety and patient care.  The survey covered major institutions including Sir J.J. Hospital and Grant Medical College in Mumbai, BJGMC Pune, and GMC Nagpur among others. The survey found that security shortfalls remain the most pressing concern, with an average 25% deficit in guard deployment across hospitals. Kerala HC seeks report on steps taken to ensure safety of doctors, staff at hospitals While the average sanctioned strength is about 200 guards per institution, only around 150 are deployed, leaving critical areas such as OPD (Outpatient Department), casualty wards, hostels and campus zones vulnerable. “This gap has resulted in increased incidents of violence, harassment and unauthorised entry into restricted areas, including hostels,” the report stated. Colleges primarily rely on Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) for staffing (72%), followed by Maharashtra …

Supreme Court spares jail term for convict in POCSO case, cites systemic failures

The Supreme Court on Friday (May 23, 2025) spared a convict, who married the victim, from undergoing a jail term under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, citing systemic failures and the need to ensure justice for the adolescent girl and her child. A bench comprising Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan invoked its extraordinary jurisdiction under Article 142 of the Constitution, which empowers the top court to pass any order as is necessary for doing complete justice in any cause or matter pending before it. “This year we have completed 75 years of the Constitution on 26th January. The Constitution contemplates the State to be a welfare state. The Constitution guaranteed social and economic justice to all the citizens. In this case, there is a failure to provide both social and economic justice to the victim,” the verdict said. Failure of welfare state concept The facts of the case indicate the failure of the concept of welfare state, it added. “To remedy the situation in this case, it is the …

Harnessing AI for systemic change: Can India’s startups solve its urban and environmental crises?

Harnessing AI for systemic change: Can India’s startups solve its urban and environmental crises?

Navigating rush hour might soon feel less chaotic. At dozens of intersections, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now analysing traffic patterns, drawing insights from Google Maps data, and suggesting optimised timings for traffic signals. This type of AI-driven solution aims to reduce frustrating stop-and-go traffic, save fuel and cut emissions. It’s a small intervention in a massive system, yet it hints at a larger possibility: Can India harness the potent combination of digital infrastructure, entrepreneurial energy, and rapidly advancing AI to tackle its most complex, systemic challenges? India finds itself in a unique position. Building Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) – from the Aadhaar identity system to the ubiquitous UPI payments network and emerging data-sharing frameworks – has created unprecedented digital rails. Layered onto this is a vast, young population rapidly embracing digital tools, and a vibrant startup ecosystem teeming with technical talent and ambition. AI represents a technology shift as profound, perhaps, as fire or electricity. An enabler that can accelerate progress across nearly every field, its power demands a bold approach to innovation, pushing boundaries …

When Matthew Perry Reflected On His White Privilege & Aimed To Become A ‘Better Ally’ To Victims Of Systemic Racism

Matthew Perry Once Said He Wanted To Become A ‘Better Ally’ To People Who Experienced Racism (Photo Credit – Instagram) In a refreshingly candid moment, Matthew Perry once took to Instagram to lay down some truth bombs about white privilege, and honestly, it hit differently. The Friends star pulled no punches, expressing his desire to step up as a better ally for the Black community facing systemic racism in America. He dropped two eye-catching images. The first was a straightforward black screen shouting “Black Lives Matter,” while the second read, “It is a privilege to learn about racism, rather than experience racism.” Boom. Those words hit like a wake-up call, spotlighting a reality many overlook. “Though I am from Canada, I am a white man living in America, which means I am privileged,” he laid it out. No fluff, just honesty. Perry continued, “I don’t know how to fix everything that is wrong, but I want to learn how to be a better ally for every Black person affected by systemic racism.” He added, “I …
