‘Shocking’ fixing allegations leads to removal of taekwondo competition director from National Games

Two days before the taekwondo competition was to start at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, the competition director was removed because of fears of alleged competition manipulation, an Indian Olympic Association (IOA) statement said. The Prevention of Manipulation of Competition Committee (PMC) had also received complaints that some officials of the Taekwondo Federation of India had already fixed the result in 10 of the 16 weight categories. “The asking price is Rs 3 lakh for a gold medal, Rs 2 lakh for silver and Rs 1 lakh for bronze,” the IOA said it was informed. The Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) based on ‘strong recommendations’ of a three-member PMC removed T Praveen Kumar as director of competitions. He was replaced by S Dinesh Kumar. A minor has also been detained in this case, an officer said on Friday. Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Arvind Kumar Verma said SHO Gaurabadshahpur was informed by the inspector-in-charge of Aliganj police station of Lucknow that two suspicious persons were found in the police station area. During checking, they told during interrogation that on October 30, a person of their village Anurag Yadav was murdered along with other members of his family over land dispute. Indian taekwondo player Rupa Bayor won a silver medal in the U30 Poomsae event at the Asian Open Taekwondo Championships, organised by the Asian Taekwondo Union, in Tangerang, Indonesia. The event, started on October 15, came to an end of Saturday. Chinmay Behera, on the other hand, won a bronze medal in the U40 men’s category as he lost in the semifinals. Cheng Ka Fu and Au Kei Yeung of Hong Kong won the gold and silver medals. “I am glad to win the first medal in G2 for Odisha state. I have prepared for this event for the last one year. Last time, it was postponed in Vietnam. All top players from across Asia participated in the event. I tried my best and won a bronze medal,” Chinmay, ranked 108th in the world, told The Bridge. Rupa Bayor became the first Indian taekwondo player to break into the top of the World Poomsae Rankings. Rupa, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, is currently ranked 9th in the world rankings. Rupa rose three places with 82.92 points to acquire her current rankings. World Poomsae Rankings is topped by Denmark’s Eva Sandersen with 337.30 points. Kaitlyn Marie Reclusado of the USA is placed in the second spot with 236.84 points. Jocel Lyn Ninobla is trailing them at third spot with 182.42 points. Aruna Tanwar bows out after heavy defeat in Taekwondo

Indian para taekwondo player Aruna Tanwar ended her Paralympics 2024 campaign with a first-round defeat in the women’s K 44-47kg category on Thursday. Aruna was facing Nurcihan Ekinci of Turkey in a round of 16 contest. Aruna was no match for her opponent from Turkey who garnered points at will in the five-minute round. Ekinci scored two points from a body kick nine times during the contest while the Indian conceded one penalty point (gam-jeom). Aruna failed to advance to repechage as Nurcihan Ekinci lost her quarterfinal contest later. The K44 category includes athletes with impairments in one arm above the elbow. Para taekwondo was introduced during Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. Athletes will compete in  five separate weight categories for each gender. In Para taekwondo, matches are held in a one-round contest, lasting up to five minutes. The main difference from able-bodied Taekwondo is that kicks to the head and punches are not allowed because not all athletes can block similarly. Taekwondo player Aruna Tanwar qualified for the 2024 Paris Paralympics on Sunday after she secured a medal in the U-47kg category of Para Taekwondo at the Asian Paralympics Qualifier held in Taian, China. This will be her successive Paralympics. In 2021, Aruna, who has deformities in both hands, became the first-ever Indian Taekwondo athlete to qualify for the Paralympics when she received a wild card entry. “We are beyond thrilled to announce that NCOE Lucknow’s very own Taekwondo superstar Aruna Tanwar has officially qualified for the Paris Paralympics 2024!” Sports Authority of India (SAI) Lucknow centre posted on X. India has so far secured 36 quota places for Paris Paralympics across seven sports. Aruna, who hails from Haryana’s Bhiwani district, is the only Indian taekwondo player to win a berth for the Games.
