Rani Kapur alleges “forced takeover” bid in fresh plea before Supreme Court

Amid an ongoing court-monitored mediation process in the inheritance dispute involving late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estate, his 80-year-old mother, Ms. Rani Kapur, has moved the Supreme Court, accusing her daughter-in-law, Ms. Priya Kapur, of attempting a “forced takeover” of the disputed family assets. In her fresh plea before the apex court, the octogenarian has alleged that Ms. Priya Kapur and others were continuing efforts to assume control over key companies and assets linked to the estate despite the Supreme Court’s May 7 order appointing former Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud as mediator to facilitate a negotiated settlement. The application was mentioned before a Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan, which agreed to hear the matter on May 14. “Looks like we have entered into an arena where the Mahabharata will look very small. We will look into it [application],” Justice Pardiwala remarked during the hearing, as senior counsels representing the rival factions referred to fresh allegations concerning the functioning of the family trust and a proposed meeting of the company’s board. …

Sai Pallavi was studying medicine in Tbilisi, Georgia, minding her business, when a film director offered her a role. The movie in question is Premam, directed by Alphonse Puthren. The year was 2015. And the actress, Sai Pallavi Senthamarai Kannan, was still a medical student who had agreed to shoot the entire film during her college holidays on the condition that it would not get in the way of her degree. She finished the degree anyway. However she never registered as a practitioner. There were too many films to make. An $81 billion Warner-Paramount mega merger has received shareholders’ stamp of approval, propelling a deal that could vastly reshape Hollywood and the wider media landscape closer to the finish line.Per a preliminary vote count on Thursday, the overwhelming majority of Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders voted in support of selling the entire business to Paramount for $31 a share, the company said. Including debt, the deal is valued at nearly $111 billion. A greenlight from company shareholders increases the likelihood of that becoming a reality. But it’s not a done deal quite yet. The acquisition still faces ongoing regulatory reviews. Warner has said it expects to close sometime in the third fiscal quarter.Meanwhile, Warner shareholders rejected a separate measure Thursday that outlined post-merger payments for company executives. Paramount’s quest for Warner has been far from smooth sailing. And while …

Gujarat HC dismisses Asaram Ashram plea, clears takeover of Motera land

The Gujarat High Court (HC) on Friday dismissed an appeal filed by the Asaram Ashram Trust in a long-running land dispute in the Motera area in Ahmedabad. The court upheld its previous orders to resume the land and clear the way for the state government to take possession of more than 45,000 square metres of prime land, news agency IANS reported. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice DN Ray affirmed an earlier judgment delivered by a single judge, which had upheld the Ahmedabad Collector’s order to take back the land on grounds of breach of allotment conditions and encroachment. The bench found that the Ashram had “repeatedly breached” government conditions and that “no question of regularisation of illegal occupation arises”, IANS reported. Ashram extended by 16,000 square metres, alleges state govt The land was originally allotted decades ago for limited religious purposes, measuring around 33,980 square metres. However, the Ashram expanded its actual possession to nearly 50,000 square metres, the state claimed. Government submissions relied on GPS-based and satellite mapping to …
