Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Friday said that it was he who proposed holding talks with neighbouring Karnataka on the Cauvery issue, considering some hope for a positive outcome. The chief minister declared in the Assembly that he did not wish to indulge in cheap politics on the Cauvery issue. Responding to the Leader of Opposition Udhyanidhi Stalin, who raised the Cauvery issue, Vijay traced the way Tamil Nadu had handled the issue since 1969– from considering dialogue to sticking to legal recourse. Against this background, he said that his government is firm on dealing with the Cauvery issue legally and that there is no change about it. Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was released on station bail on Tuesday after being questioned by the police in connection with a case registered against him, following a direction from the Madras High Court. The court had ordered the police to release Udhayanidhi after completing the inquiry on Tuesday itself. Acting on the direction, police questioned him for around one-and-a-half hours at the Sengipatti Police Station in Thanjavur district in the presence of Superintendent of Police Sundaravathanam before releasing him on station bail, news agency IANS reported. Former AIADMK minister, dissident leader C Vijayabaskar on Tuesday resigned from his MLA post and submitted a letter to Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar. Vijayabaskar was among the AIADMK rebel leaders who voted in favour of the TVK regime in the trust vote held in the Assembly on May 13.
