Balachandar Many parts of Tamil Nadu received heavy rainfall on Tuesday (March 11, 2025) following an orange alert issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai. Several parts of Chennai witnessed mild showers. Till 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Vedaranyam, Oothu in Tirunelveli district and Valinokam in Ramanathapuram district recorded 3 cm of rainfall each. Meanwhile, Ramanathapuram, Nalumukku, Kakkachi, Thangachimadam, Parangipettai, Cuddalore Collector Office, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, and Rameswaram recorded 2 cm each. Pamban, Thoothukudi Airport, Mandapam, Manjolai, Sirkali, Adiramapattinam, Thiruvarur, Kodiayakarai, Vedharanyam, Tuticorin, Thalaignayer and Thoothukudi railway station recorded 1 cm each. Under the influence of a trough of low over southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu coast extending up to 1.5 km above sea level, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts on Wednesday (March 12, 2025), according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai. Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai has predicted heavy rainfall in three districts of the state including Chengalpattu, Viluppuram and Cuddalore. The rainfall will be a repercussion of low-pressure area over west-central Bay of Bengal which persisted over the same region at 2.30 pm on December 22, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As per the RMC officials, the Bay of Bengal has changed the wind flow pattern and the coastal districts have been witnessing northerly winds and due to this haze or mist is expected to prevail in the city. Image Source : PTI Rains continue to lash parts of Tamil Nadu Widespread rains continued to lash parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday. Traffic at Kathipara, Poonammallee, Porur, Maduravoyal, Vysarpadi, and Chennai suburbs came to a standstill with all sorts of vehicles getting stranded in the rainwater. Residents of Vyasarpadi and Pallavaram complained that water logging in their areas during monsoon has become a regular feature. Overnight rains lashed Chennai and the neighbouring Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, besides Villupuram and some areas in the Cauvery delta region. Several areas in Thiruvannamalai, which had experienced mud slips atleast four times when Cyclone Fengal crossed the Tamil Nadu and Karaikal coast on November 30, and some parts in the southern districts, as well, were swarmed by swathes of water. An NDRF team has been deployed at Thiruvannamalai, equipped with advanced disaster management equipment to respond to any emergency, an official said. Image Source : PTI Heavy rains lash coastal areas of southern states Cyclone Fengal: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday night said cyclone Fengal (cyclonic storm) has commenced making landfall close to Puducherry and it may take 4 hours for it to cross the coast completely.  “It is likely to move west southwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during next 3 hours. The landfall process will continue during the same period,” IMD posted on X. Havy rains expected in Nellore, Tirupati and Chittoor The weather departed predicted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers at many places over south coastal and Rayalaseema regions while extremely heavy rains are expected at one or two places over SPSR-Nellore, Tirupati and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu Amid the prediction of rains in several parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions, authorities have declared holidays for schools and colleges in several regions, including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur, in anticipation of heavy rains. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, on Tuesday (November 26, 2024) said that the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a deep depression and that it is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday. Tiruchirappalli-based Bharathidasan University has postponed undergraduate and postgraduate November 2024 semester examinations scheduled for Wednesday (November 27, 2024) in view of heavy rainfall forecast. The revised date of the exams would be announced later, B. Jeyapragash, Controller of Examinations (in-charge), said in a press release. Stalin on Wednesday (October 16, 2024) said the State government has been preparing for three months to tackle the impacts of the monsoon, and that soon, a permanent solution would be found to the problem of water stagnation in the city. The stormwater drain work and other preparations have come in handy, he said. “Ask the people about their feedback,” Mr. Stalin told reporters after inspecting the relief work at Pallikaranai on Wednesday. Mr. Stalin said after coming to power, the DMK-led State government had formed an Advisory Committee for Mitigation and Management of Flood Risk in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA), led by former Indian Administrative Services (IAS) official V. Holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, three neighbouring districts on October 16 In view of the heavy rain forecast, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday instructed the authorities to declare a rain holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 16.  According to an official release, October 16 has been declared a public holiday for government offices and public sector undertakings in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts. However, key government departments involved in rescue and relief operations would function.  Services by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), Chennai Metro, the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), airlines (subject to weather condition), petrol bunks, hotels, and eateries would function as usual. “Shops and commercial establishments would function as usual.” The Tamil Nadu government has also advised the private companies to either work with a skeleton staff or allow their employees to work from home on October 16, when heavy rain has been forecast.  Source link
