Railway lines restored to traffic after Baghmati Express accident; Southern Railway probing from multiple angles

The Southern Railway restored all railway lines to traffic on Sunday (October 13, 2024) after the train accident involving the Baghmati Express at Kavaraipettai in Tiruvallur district on Friday (October 11, 2024) night. Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle) A.M. Choudhary will conduct a statutory inquiry of the train accident at the Chennai Divisional Railway Manager’s office on October 16 and 17, where the public can share evidence regarding the accident. The Government Railway Police (GRP) of Korukkupet station has also started investigation, along with the Railway Safety Commissioner and National Investigation Agency officials, by visiting the accident site on Saturday (October 12, 2024). A senior GRP official said the accident was being investigated from various angles, including human sabotage, by conducting enquiries with the Baghmati Express loco pilot Subramanian, assistant pilot Ram Avatar Meena, Kavarappet Station Manager Mani Prasad Babu and others. New Delhi: The railway derailment in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district – after a passenger train travelling at 75 km per hour rammed into a stationary goods train – was caused by a “mismatch between signal and route”, RN Singh, General Manager of Southern Railways, told NDTV Saturday morning. The passenger train – the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express – should have been switched to the main line but “something wrong happened”, Mr Singh said. The train was inadvertently switched to a closed section of the track on which the goods train was parked. It is too early to say exactly what happened, Mr Singh said, noting that signal had been set for the main line while the track switched the train to the closed loop. “The train was headed to Gudur (in Andhra Pradesh). Chennai: A passenger train, travelling at 75 kmph, hit a stationary goods train on Friday, in Tamil Nadu, at around 8:30 pm. The train entered a loop line instead of the main line, following which at least 12 coaches derailed, leaving several passengers injured, railway officials said. A power car also caught fire. Train 12578 Mysuru – Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a goods train at Kavaraippettai railway station in Tiruvallur district, near Chennai. 1,360 passengers were on board, said Tiruvallur District Collector Dr T Prabhushankar. 19 of the passengers are reported to be injured, and of them, four suffered severe injuries. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, he said. No casualties reported so far.
