The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in five districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, while predicting moderate rain across several parts of the State, Puducherry and Karaikal over the next week. According to the weather department, an atmospheric trough currently extends from East Vidarbha to Tamil Nadu, passing through Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu weather update: Heavy rain likely in 10 districts till June 12

Heavy rains are expected in 10 districts from Tuesday due to the southwest monsoon over Tamil Nadu, according to the RMC. Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Kanyakumari and western ghats of Tirunelveli districts will receive rains till June 12, the latest bulletin from the Regional Meteorological Centre said. However, due to high maximum temperature, combined with high humidity, it is likely to cause discomfort weather over north interior Tamilnadu districts and coastal areas of the state over the same period. Cuddalore district recorded a maximium temperature of 40.7 degree Celcius on Monday, followed by Chennai, which registered 40.4 degree Celcius. Meanwhile, Oothu region in Tirunelveli district recorded 11 centimeter of rainfall during the last 24 hours and Upasi in Coimbatore district registered nine centimeter rainfall during the same period. For Chennai, the weather office predicted that hot and humid conditions were likely to prevail. However, light and moderate rain with thunderstorm is likely to occur in the evening or night. Of the cancelled flights, 36 are domestic and 11 are international. Furthermore, the airport authorities have advised passengers travelling on Sunday to check with their respective airlines for confirmation of departure timings, as more flights may be cancelled if the cyclone intensifies. The cancelled domestic flights include 18 departing flights from Chennai to Madurai, Tiruchi, Thoothukudi, and Salem and 18 arriving flights from the same cities to Chennai. Among the international flights, six departures from Chennai to Colombo (5 flights) and Jaffna (1 flight) have been cancelled, along with five arrivals—four from Colombo and one from Jaffna. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and assured him of all possible help after Cyclone Fengal wreaked havoc in 14 districts of the state, government sources said Tuesday. This comes a day after Stalin wrote to PM Modi seeking relief of Rs 2,000 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
