Govt proposes single rulebook for TV, radio and DTH services under Telecom Act

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) on Friday released draft rules to bring television channels, radio stations, DTH operators and other broadcasting services under a single regulatory framework. An MIB official told HT that the objective was to create a simpler and more predictable system for broadcasters. (Image sourced from Forbes) The draft Telecommunications (Television, Radio and Associated Services) Rules, 2026 seek to replace multiple sets of guidelines and permissions with a unified rulebook under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. According to the ministry, the proposed rules consolidate six existing policy frameworks covering television channels, DTH services, Headend-in-the-Sky (HITS) operators, private FM radio, community radio and IPTV services into a single set of regulations. The draft has been placed in the public domain for consultation, and comments can be submitted till July 27. Government slashes Vodafone Idea AGR dues by about 27 per cent to Rs 64,046 crore

The government has slashed adjusted gross revenue liability on debt-ridden Vodafone Idea by about 27 per cent to Rs 64,046 crore after reassessment of statutory dues, a company filing said on Thursday. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has frozen the AGR dues as on December 31, 2025, at Rs 87,695 crore and that the said amount was, however, subject to reassessment by the DoT and final approval by a Committee to be constituted by the DoT to reassess the AGR dues. Incidents of Global Positioning System (GPS) data manipulation, or GPS spoofing, affecting flights were reported in the vicinity of the Delhi airport, and reports of spoofing and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference are also being received from other Indian airports including Kolkata, Amritsar, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai, the government informed the Parliament on Monday. In a written statement in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Civil Aviation Minister K K Rammohan Naidu said that apart from standard operating procedures issued by sector regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on real-time reporting of such incidents around the Delhi airport, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sought help from the Wireless Monitoring Organization (WMO) to “possibly identify the source of interference/spoofing”. Spoofing involves transmitting counterfeit signals to deceive location signals on the aircraft, which could lead to computation of incorrect position, timing, and navigation data.
