UK Cloud Services Market “Not Working As Well As It Could,” Says Competition Authority

The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority has published the provisional findings of an investigation into all cloud service providers in the country, following concerns raised by telecoms regulator Ofcom. The current conclusion is that the cloud services market is “not working as well as it could,” as it is difficult for customers to switch cloud providers or use multiple clouds. A lack of competition is likely leading to higher costs, less choice, less innovation, and lower quality of services. “The ability of UK businesses to put healthy pressure on cloud providers to offer better deals is key to ensuring good outcomes and to unlocking the potential benefits of cloud services,” the CMA said in a press release. 4 main concerns about the U.K. cloud services market In its investigation, the CMA’s independent inquiry group found four primary concerns: Cloud customers face a limited choice of providers and are not aware that multiple providers can offer the same services. Technical and commercial barriers make it difficult to switch cloud providers or use multiple clouds, leading to …

A Chinese-state-sponsored cyberattack compromised the U.S. Treasury, gaining access to classified documents through a vulnerability through third-party cybersecurity provider BeyondTrust. The breach, revealed on Dec. 31, underscores the growing sophistication of state-backed cyber espionage efforts. “Treasury takes very seriously all threats against our systems, and the data it holds,” a department spokesperson said in a statement. “Over the last four years, Treasury has significantly bolstered its cyber defense, and we will continue to work with both private and public sector partners to protect our financial system from threat actors.” Threat actors stole a key to BeyondTrust BeyondTrust reported the breach to the Treasury Department on Dec. 8. The Treasury, in turn, reported the attack to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency and the FBI. Representatives of the Chinese government told reporters the nation was not responsible for the breach. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington told Reuters attributions of nation-state-sponsored threat actors to China were “smear attacks against China without any factual basis.” The breach occurred after “a threat actor had gained access to …

In India’s Telecommunications Draft Bill, A Win For Elon Musk’s Starlink

India’s satellite broadband service market is expected to grow 36% a year. Bengaluru: India has proposed a licensing approach to assigning spectrum for satellite internet services and exempt companies from having to bid for it, a win for Elon Musk’s venture Starlink which has lobbied hard against any auctions. The proposal was included in a new draft bill for the telecommunications sector, which seeks to replace the 138-year old Indian Telegraph Act that currently governs the sector. The bill was tabled for approval in parliament on Monday. The foreign firms have been demanding a licensing approach, concerned that an auction by India unlike elsewhere will raise the likelihood of other nations following suit, increasing costs and investments, Reuters had reported in June. Reliance Jio, country’s biggest telecom operator, however had disagreed and told government that an auction is the right approach, similar to 5G spectrum distribution in India. Foreign satellite service providers could offer voice and data services and compete with traditional telecom players, and so there must be an auction to achieve a level …
