Satwik-Chirag’s title drought extends to 2 years

Satwik-Chirag’s title drought extends to 2 years

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty finished runner-up at the 2026 Thailand Open Super 500 on Sunday. Up against Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, the top seeded pair from India went down 12-21, 23-25 in 53 minutes in what was their first final of the year. The loss meant that Rankireddy and Shetty, India’s ace doubles pair, now haven’t won a title for over two years. Their last title win came at the Thailand Open in May 2024. Rankireddy and Shetty were completely outplayed in the opening game by the Indonesians. The Indians were well in control in the second game before Carnando and Marthin raced to take the lead. The Indians saved four match points in their bid to force a decider, but eventually crumbled to a straight games loss. They were guilty of playing unforced errors at crucial junctures multiple times in the contest. “It was a little difficult for us to control [in the second game],” said Satwik after the match. “They took us into their game style and it …

Satwik-Chirag dabble at Plan B; make Thailand Open finals after 3-set entertainer

Satwik-Chirag dabble at Plan B; make Thailand Open finals after 3-set entertainer

Could a sub-optimal, discomfiting but essential Plan B be deployed for a win? That was the question posed to Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty throughout their first set of the Thailand Open Super 500. They lost the battle 19-21, but won the war, 22-20, 21-16 for a 82 minute three-set tussle that gave them their first final of the season. Like lightening, the light of the win followed the sound of noise of the past fortnight. Plan B implied, allowing former World No 1s – now No 9, Malaysians Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izuddin to dictate the opening moves like in a chess game: the battle confined to flat, fast net exchanges, where the Indians would be starved of lifts, to smash down. A taut, tense front and midcourt war-theatre, where the Indians would necessarily need to defend Goh’s jump smashes if an errant lift ballooned up. Out of their comfort zone, it would also mean Satwik playing front court, and Chirag manning the back – an adapting measure that’s necessary to be trained …

PV Sindhu reflects after Thailand Open exit

PV Sindhu reflects after Thailand Open exit

PV Sindhu bowed out of the women’s singles quarterfinals at the Thailand Open Super 500 after a hard-fought three-game loss to top seed and World No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi on Friday. Sindhu went down 21-19, 18-21, 15-21 in a contest that lasted a little over an hour, showing flashes of her attacking best before the Japanese star pulled away in the decider. Reflecting on the narrow defeat, Sindhu admitted that small margins made the difference. “I think I could have converted it into a win. Simple errors are what I made. At the highest level, 2-3 points really matter a lot,” she told BWF. The Indian shuttler felt she had opportunities to close out the second game and seize momentum earlier in the match. “I was leading in the second game, and maybe I should have converted it into a win. I should have been on the upper hand, but I made those errors which I shouldn’t have made.” Despite the loss, Sindhu took positives from the week, especially from pushing some of the world’s …

Sat-Chi reflects on lack of appreciation comment, ‘90% positive reactions’ | Badminton News

It’s a storm Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have now signed up for. Having willingly opened themselves up to the aftermath of asking why they don’t get enough appreciation, the duo reckon the only way to ride this hurricane is accept the tempestuous nature of reactions that will follow. The uneasy calm — indifference to a Thomas Cup bronze — has never been their style. So they will barrel through the wave of reactions that descended on them. Speaking to BWF after entering a regulation quarterfinal at the Thailand Open where they are top seeds, Satwik-Chirag grinned and paused a tad, to thank their fans. “Ofcourse there are many good people who stay up late at night and watch our matches,” Satwik would say. “There were negatives as well when we spoke, but more than that I saw almost 90 per cent positive reactions. That is a good sign.” For Chirag, the statements blew up much more than they expected. “There were obviously lot of critics, but there were also a lot of very positive …

Top 10 spots up for grabs if PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen win quarters | Badminton News

2 min readMay 14, 2026 08:01 PM IST Lakshya Sen has not beaten Thailand’s World No 2 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in three years. Both times at the World Championships in 2023 and the French Open in 2024, his third sets were blowouts, pointing to lack in endurance. This year, he seems to be playing on a full tank, though when he runs into the local favourite on Friday, he will have only the slightest discomfort from his healing elbow – after he injured himself at the Thomas Cup. There was no visible detriment in the way he played, as he defeated Zhu Xuan Chen 21-12, 21-13 rather comfortably. Besides a spot in the semis of Super 500, the World No 11 can re-enter Top Ten with this result. Sen has been the 4th best player in the world this season, as per WTF rankings, but a title would help mightily, even if that demands he beat his batchmate who has lost only once to him in 5 years. As the Indian challenge got whittled down to …

Lakshya Sen, PV Sindhu move to R16; Ayush Shetty exits

Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu had comfortable wins in their respective first-round matches at the Thailand Open Super500 Tournament on Wednesday. Lakshya defeated Jason Teh of Singapore 21-16, 21-17, while PV Sindhu hammered the lower-ranked Tung Ciou-Tong of Chinese Taipei in straight games, 21-9, 21-12. Following them, the veteran Srikanth Kidambi also claimed a win in his first round matchup, knocking out the former world champion Loh Kean Yew, 21-14, 21-15. On the other hand, the in-form Ayush Shetty had a disappointing early exit, losing in three games to Kodai Naraoka of Japan, 13-21, 21-17, 4-21. Anmol Kharb misses a big win The youngster Anmol Khrab had a very good chance of upsetting the former Olympic Champion Chen Yufei, but she couldn’t hold her composure and lost in three games. Anmol made a strong start, winning the first game 21-19 and then, despite losing the second game 13-21, she surged ahead with an 11-2 lead in the deciding third game. But then, Chen showed her class and won the next 12 out of …
