Under the scorching midday sun, women in R. Pudhupattinam, a coastal village about 60 kilometres from Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu, continue a daily ritual that has sustained generations. Barefoot and carrying as many containers as they can, the women walk two or three kilometres along the shoreline to collect drinking water from shallow pits dug on the beach. The fishing village, known for its close relationship with the sea, depends on freshwater from beachside pits. Residents believe the naturally filtered water is healthier than commercially supplied alternatives. Many are of the view that packaged and canned water, which they say contains chlorine, often causes cold and other health issues. “Our ancestors drew freshwater from this beachside pit since the British colonial period,” said R. Danabakkiyam, a resident of the village. The water is traditionally used for cooking meals for fishermen before they venture into sea, with locals believing it enhances the taste and nutritional value of food. The skydiving team’s performance stood out, especially after an incident during the final rehearsal two days ago, when two skydivers became entangled mid-air and had a choppy landing in the sea. RAGHUNATHAN Shaastra 2025, the technical festival of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), which will be held from January 3 to 7, is expected to attract around 1.25 lakh participants to the campus. The 26th edition will feature 80 contests and 130 stalls, including those set up by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Navy, and the Army, said V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT-M. On the first two days, the institute will host an open house, for which over 55,000 participants have registered, Mr. Kamakoti told mediapersons here on Monday. The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is collaborating with the institute for this year’s festival. Though the Naval Department of the IIT-M does the maximum number of consultancies, very few students opt for the discipline, Mr. Kamakoti said. The first webinar, scheduled for December 22 at 11.30 a.m. will focus on ‘Recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) in women – management and prevention’. The speakers include Nitin Kekre, consultant urologist and head of urology at Naruvi Hospital, who will speak on the definition, clinical presentation and evaluation of UTI. Consultant urologist Rohit Sethi will discuss recurrent UTI, how common it is and the causes. Ganesh Gopalakrishnan, consultant urologist at Vedanayagam Hospitals, Coimbatore, will speak on UTI treatment and prevention and Maneesh Sinha, senior consultant urologist at NU Hospitals, Bengaluru, will provide insights on ‘UTIs in special situations such as pregnancy and menopause’. Employment scenario in India grim, says ILO report India’s youth account for almost 83% of the unemployed workforce and the share of youngsters with secondary or higher education in the total unemployed youth has almost doubled from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022, as per the India Employment Report 2024 released by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD) here on Tuesday.
